Allergic's McKell Cup Win Nothing To Be Sneezed At

By Julieanne Horsman

Allergic has notched his second black type victory with an impressive come-from-behind win in the Listed McKell Cup at Royal Randwick.

The Goldolphin gelding upset short priced favourite Broadside, denying Gai Waterhouse back-to-back McKell Cups. Jumping from barrier 8 and lumping 4.5kg more than his highest rated rival, Allergic was slow to begin and settled at the back of the field.

With 800m to go, Allergic was still 10 lengths last and jockey Josh Parr admitted to nerves at that point.

“I was a long way from them and that was our only query today with the big weight,” Parr said.

“I was concerned about the possibility of a load of dead wood, so to speak, in front of us, and unable to take us into the race.”

Parr guided his mount outwards and they found the tail end of Big Blue.

“I ended up on the back of the stablemate and he took me a hell of a long way,” he said.

Allergic flew home down the outside to win by 1.3 lengths from Broadside with outside chance, Soviet Courage, another half a length behind.

“It was a great effort, especially with the big weight,” Godolphin Racing Manager Claire Mackay said.

“This horse’s class really came to the fore today,” Parr added.

There are no set plans for Allergic’s immediate future.

“We’ll take him home and see how he pulls up,” Mackay said. “He has had a long prep so we will have to see.”
