Punter's Intelligence Wrap - The Ingham Race Day

For a race that was run at a reasonable tempo, few horses made significant ground in The Ingham at Randwick on Saturday which is why a few runs behind the winner Yorkshire stand out.

Chief among them is Tavi Time, who Punter’s Intelligence data shows recorded the fastest last 600m of the race in 33.78. Almost two lengths quicker than the next best.

The first 800m of the race was run in 47.20, about 16 lengths faster than the other 1600m event on the day, yet those up on the speed were able to keep going. From an overall time perspective they’ve run slightly faster than last year’s edition and about eight lengths outside the course record.

They didn’t walk.

Tavi Time finished ninth, and closer to what was considered inferior ground by the riders, and it’s worth noting that he won the Summer Cup (2000m) last year after running on this day.

His stablemate You Wahng is the only other horse to break 34 seconds, running 33.95, and she’s finished 16th, while Sabaj has run 34.03 in managing 12th.

The ever-consistent Estadio Mestalla ran the fastest last 200m of the race, 11.64, as he tried to run down the winner who it must be said was brave riding the speed and still running 11.92 for his last 200m.

Yorkshire continues to raise the bar and we’ll find out how good he really is in the autumn with that ticket into the Doncaster Mile but Tavi Time is the take home horse for the shorter term.

The most fascinating finish of the meeting came in the Jack Ingham AO Handicap (1200m) with Axius somehow managing to win the race despite being clearly passed by Snack Bar earlier in the straight.

And he’s run a slower final 600m. Axius was accounted for by Snack Bar in the 400m-200m with the latter running 10.93 to 11.14 but that final 200m saw that swing around with Axius running 11.87 compared to 12.05 and it was enough to give him a nose margin.

Overall, Axius ran 34.27 for his last 600m and Snack Bar 34.17 so it’s a curious result.

The clear horse to follow from the race, and arguably the meeting, is Althoff who probably should have beaten both of them.

From back in the field he’s run 33.74 for his last 600m, comfortably the race’s best, and he had to do some weaving to ensure clear running which is illustrated in his 11.19 from the 400m-200m.

He’s then stormed home in 11.55 for his last 200m, two lengths faster than the eventual winner.

The four-year-old must have had his share of issues, it was only his second start this year and first since March, but this was a run of a horse flying and a win looks close for him.

Future History’s win the Christmas Cup is worthy of a mention for the tactically brilliant ride by Adam Hyeronimus to deliver an all the way success.

Granted, nothing really put any pressure on him so Hyeronimus was able to apply pressure by continually, gradually, increasing the tempo.

Once he’d established the lead and slowed them up to a couple of 13.30 splits he asked the gelding to go ever so slightly faster for each split until the last 200m.

It meant he asked them to chase him and when you’re in a 2400m contest it’d take an exceptional sprint to reel him in.

He’s run a last 600m of 34.69, only three lengths slower than the race’s fastest run by Palmetto who at the 600m was about five lengths off the leader.

It’ll be said that Hollywood Hero didn’t stay but all things considered his run was pretty good. He’s clocked the fastest splits between the 800m and 200m – overall 33.81 – before a final 200m of 11.92 so he’s sprinted early but hasn’t been able to sustain it.

Fastest last 600m: Massira 33.50
