Northern Rivers Set For Christmas Holiday Racing

By Geoff Newling

While Lismore Turf Club could have more than 90 runners at Friday’s Scott Jones Christmas Cup meeting, Ballina Jockey Club is also preparing for a good festive meeting on Boxing Day.

Lismore has 87 runners for Friday’s big eight-race TAB meeting, which includes the famous seafood luncheon. Ballina received 81 nominations for next Tuesday’s six-race TAB Boxing Day meeting.

The good nominations for the Sky 2 TAB meeting (where all races are worth $10,000) had BJC general manager Matt Bertram preparing for a good day on and off the track.

“That’s a great result for us,” Matt Bertram said.

“Great for the local trainers too. The Sky 2 meetings allow the local trainers to race without a lot of the South East Queensland trainers coming down and dominating. It’s going to be a good day out for the local racegoers too. A lot of the locals love to come out on Boxing Day.”

Local radio station ZZZ FM is the major sponsor on the day with some good racing assured especially in the benchmark 50 1260m and benchmark 55 1400m.

“My Cousin Rhett (trained by Ballina’s Terry McCarthy) was very unlucky here last start,” Bertram said of the five-year-old gelding son of Raheeb.

“Dux Nutz is a last start winner here for Daniel Bowen and Bitty also goes well for Sharon Pepper. I think it’s a half brother to her good old horse Bingo Bobby.”
