Neil Evans' Tips For Newcastle (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely around Soft 5/6 with some lead-up rain and rail out 5m

Race 1 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Talented local filly 6. No Laughing Matter is the one to beat resuming off a smart trial win. Leading metro hoop takes the ride, and won easily on a wet track at only her second start.

Dangers: Muswellbrook mare 8. Makana was impressive scoring first-up at home on a Soft 6 off a lengthy break, taking over on the turn and comfortably holding the opposition.

How to play it: No Laughing Matter to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 F & M MAIDEN HCP (1350m):

Tricky maiden for the girls, with a few chances. Newcastle 3YO 4. Just Like Lisa was ridden much quieter from the wider gate at Port Macquarie in only her third start, and hit the line from a mile back. Suspect there will be more of the same here on a bigger track, drawn to get cover, and over a longer journey.

Dangers: Randwick mare 1. Send Me Wild resumes off two quiet trials, and the breeding suggests the more rain the better, given she is yet to place from three firm track starts. Warwick Farm filly 6. Press Start will find this a bit easier than the first-up task at Wyong where she was only plain from off the speed; while 7. Don't Recall dropped out in a handy maiden third-up at Wyong, but blinkers have been applied, and she draws to get a soft run.

How to play it: Just Like Lisa to win and trifecta 1,4/1,4,6,7/1,4,6,7. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 BM 58 HCP (1350m):

One of the tougher tests on the card, tailor-made for exotic players, with some hit-and-miss runners on show. The Kris Lees stable has a strong hand headed by 4YO 5. Misterzee second-up. Charged home in an impressive return at Muswellbrook in heavy ground, and this looks an ideal journey crucially drawn away from the fence.

Dangers: Talented stallion and stablemate 6. Berruti has been disappointing in three runs as favourite since sweeping home to beat a good maiden field on debut. Beat all bar the winner here two runs back in a similar race, and drawn to get a soft trail on the fence. Scone 4YO 1. Chewie Two was sound to the line after a tough run resuming in a CL1 at Dubbo, but a query whether he can find enough improvement under 62.5kg. Randwick mare 10. Yugosphere improved sharply on the soft track at Goulburn cruising home to win her maiden easily. Draws to get a charmed run, and the more rain the better. Wyong 5YO 4. Onemore Sapphire resumes off a long break, two quiet trials and will probably need the run, but if there's good speed on, watch for him rushing home late.

How to play it: Misterzee to win and first four 5,6/1,5,6,10/1,4,5,6,10/1,4,5,6,10. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 C, G & E BM 58 HCP (1350m):

Similar race for the boys only, and it doesn't get any easier. Newcastle 3YO 3. Hooyah can break through at third start after a brave chasing effort over a little further behind a smart filly at Port Macquarie.

Dangers: Plenty will depend on how much peace is afforded 3YO first starter 5. Marcher Sur L'eau who has led and cruised home in two recent trials. Has to get over from a wider draw, but debuts in blinkers. Well-bred home track 3YO 4. Lumber Dream also debuts in blinkers off three trials. By a prolific sire out of Group 1 Oaks winner Lights Of Heaven. Watch the betting on resuming 4YO 2. Prince Six who prefers it longer, but has had two trials, and will be running on.

How to play it: Hooyah to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Plenty of chances again, but keen on debutant filly 12. Jolie's Choice who steps out in blinkers off a couple of tidy winning metro trials. Should get a nice run from the gate.

Dangers: Muswellbrook 3YO 4. Elusive Babbz didn't quite attack the line on debut when well backed running about late. Better placed out to this distance, and bred to relish soft tracks. Another metropolitan-based filly who looks ready to win, 13. Super One Susie has found the line all three runs this prep, and a soft track won't hurt her cause. Local filly and half sister to multiple Group 1 winner In Her Time 10. Glowing Red was narrowly beaten on provincial debut at big odds, and looks suitably placed again, although from a more testing barrier.

How to play it: Jolie's Choice to win and trifecta 4,12,13/4,10,12,13/4,10,12,13. Odds and Evens: Evens

Jolie's Choice wins a trial at Rosehill on November 12

Race 6 BM 58 HCP (1200m):

Moderate depth sprint to finish looks ripe for improving Newcastle filly 5. Ciao Uno third-up from an ideal stalking draw. Exploded away to win on debut at Port before kept coming after a tough run three wide in a handy CL1. The one to beat.

Dangers: Wyong mare 4. Pluck And Lucky has hit the line hard from well back in her last three, and can run the quinella in a weaker affair. Hawkesbury mare 6. Moinda is best of the rest second-up over more ground, and was preferred here to the opening race.

How to play it: Ciao Uno to win and quinella 4 and 5. Odds and Evens: Split.

Ciao Uno runs second at Port Macquarie on November 12
