Morgan Eyes Gold In Country Music Cup (Tamworth Thursday)

He’s won an Italian Derby - a million dollar race - and Goldstream, the Italian bred gelding who won his first five races, is on track to win a $30,000 JT Fossey Country Music Cup at Tamworth on Thursday.

He’s also one of three runners from the Cody Morgan stable contesting the 1200m sprint.

Ligulate and Pat’s Nipper, both returning from spells, join their stablemate in the 14-horse field that highlights a big eight-race TAB card. The 14 runners have won 79 races between them for more than $2.5 million in prizemoney.

Goldstream headlines that field.

He’s won eight of his 35 starts and, apart from his Group 2 Italian Derby win, has raced in the US (fourth in a Group 1 Secretariat Stakes) before transferring from the Andreas Wohler stable to Kris Lees, he's won at Flemington, and has landed with Cody Morgan in Tamworth.

“He’s had an amazing career,” Cody Morgan said.

“Started in Italy and then ran in Group 1 races in America and ends up here in Tamworth.”

Goldstream runs fourth in the Inverell Cup on January 1

The eight-year-old has now had 35 starts and won almost $800,000 in prizemoney.

In his 11 starts for Morgan he has won a Wellington Cup as well as finishing a stout fourth in the recent 1400m Inverell Cup.

“He’s a horse who genuinely loves being in work, loves racing,” Cody said.

“The other two are resuming. Ligulate is a pretty talented horse. He’s one of a few horses from up here who has won a non-restricted race in Sydney on a Saturday.

"He goes well but my only reservation with him is it’s not his grand final. There’s a lot to come fitness wise. Pat’s Nipper is ready to go. He has won in Sydney too.”

Pat’s Nipper and Ligulate are on Country Championship campaigns and will use the Country Music Cup as a launching pad.

Morgan also has three runners in the $50,000 JT Fossey Gold BOBS Class 3 Showcase (Handicap (1000m), it is worth $100,000 for BOBS horses and Cody has Whitely, Screen Shot and Purton running.

Screen Shot is his best chance he believes in a race where Kris Lees (Magnolia Power), Damien Lane (Buckin’ Beauty and Leogang), Gwenda Markwell (I Am Magnificent), Allan Denham (Dame Kiri), Tracey Bartley (Lady I Am), Todd Howlett (Siege Warfare) and Brett Cavanough (Bellarina Magic) are all represented and pose major threats.

“It’s a very hard race, but you can’t win it sitting in your box,” he said.

“All mine need to be up to their best to compete with those.
