Apprentice Georgina McDonnell won heat 8 of the Rising Star Series at Ballina on Sunday, posting her first victory in the apprentice-only series.

McDonnell took the lead on Jacksprat ($2.50 favourite) and then kicked away rounding the bend to score by more than four lengths from Cejay Graham on Miss Whittington ($21).

Finishing third was Leah Kilner aboard Unimpeded ($3.60).

McDonnell has now booted home 25 winners since starting her apprenticeship.

Despite finishing unplaced at Ballina on Flick (6th at $19), Mikayla Weir remains the Rising Star Series leader with 17 points, ahead of Chris Williams (13pts) and Cejay Graham (11).

Heat 9 will be run at Nowra on Sunday (10th January).
