'Ell' Of A Win For Burleigh And Big Al At Goulburn

Goulburn trainer Tash Burleigh left Goulburn Race Club in the tablelands twilight of Sunday afternoon carrying two bundles of joy - one her new baby daughter Elly and two the Goulburn Cup for the second year running.

Burleigh's tough as teak galloper Al Mah Haha created a bit of history yesterday by recording back-to-back wins in the $200,000 Goulburn Soldiers Club Goulburn Cup.

The galloper dug deep in the straight for Jordan Mallyon and then kept digging some more, eventually fighting off the brave challenge of Steely (Ryan/Alexiou stable) right on the line.

It took 1400m to find the half-head margin but find it Al Mah Haha did, delivering what was almost a carbon copy of his thrilling last stride win in 2020. Three of 'Big Al's four career wins have been on his home track.

Juggling bub Elly trophy, saddle cloth and a beaming smile after the race Burleigh summed it up perfectly.

"He's just so consistent and has such a big heart."

Not only that he still has plenty of zip in those seven-year-old pins, chalking up a track record on Sunday to go with his successive cup wins.

Other highlights on the day saw the continuation of Kerry Parker's hot form as Hope in Your Heart saluted early on, Kris Lees also landed a winning double including the Spendthrift Guy Walter with Glowing Red.

Apprentice Dylan Gibbons landed a winning treble whilst Nick Olive was a popular winner of the Graeme Spackman Country Magic with his in-form gelding Invincible Dash.
