Cumming Chasing Landmark Cup Win (Casino Saturday)

He’s won the last two Casino Gold Cups and the home town star Landmarks is on track to make it three on Saturday.

Trained by Scott Cumming at Casino - Landmarks, a seven-year-old gelding son of New Approach, won the 2017 and 2018 Cup editions and is on track to make it a third when the 2019 Hotel Cecil Casino Gold Cup (1400m) is run at Casino on Saturday.

Landmarks carried just 54kg when Robbie Agnew won the 2017 Cup. Last year he had 55kg when Mathew Paget jumped on board and Paget will be there again Saturday, albeit with 57kg.

Paget and Landmarks jump from barrier 10 in a good field where Lismore mare Queen Of Kingston, sixth in last week’s Coffs Harbour Cup, might be hardest to beat even though the marvellous mare carries 62.5kg for her trainer Daniel Bowen.

Scott Cumming thinks she will be his toughest rival but believes Landmarks can make it three in a row.

“It’s taken a little bit to get him back this time but I think he’s there,” Cumming said.

Landmarks wins the 2018 Casino Cup

“He’s had a couple of runs back this time.”

He describes Landmarks, a horse he bought for just $15,000 at a Gold Coast sale and who has now won seven races and almost $122,000 in prizemoney, as a “nice, big horse”.

“There’s no tactics with him, just don’t break his stride and let him run,” he said.

“The only time he’s won from the back was when he missed the kick over 1100m and came from last.”

Landmarks ran a track record when he won last year’s Casino Gold Cup and will appreciate a firm track.

“He’s as good as I’ve ever had him,” he added.

“Loves his work but he’s no wet tracker.”

It could be a good few days for the Casino trainer who has just the three horses in work.

He also starts Tudor Sunrise in the $12,000 Bob Small Bridle Benchmark 50 Handicap (1200m) while stablemate San Sierra runs at Lismore on Monday.

San Sierra is coming off a last start 9th to Queen Of Kingston in the Daniel Baker Sprint Prelude at Coffs Harbour. A seven-year-old gelding son of Encosta De Lago, he has won seven of his 45 starts as well as having success at Lismore, winning once and finishing third in his three starts there.

On Monday he jumps from barrier five with Ryan Plumb engaged to ride.
