Wilson & Nestor Team Up For Winter Solstice Assault (Queanbeyan, Sat)

Whilst it might be the shortest day of the year on Saturday, Queanbeyan trainer Tom Wilson has made it his biggest on the calendar rolling out five leading chances on the six-race card at Queanbeyan from his small but progressive stable.

One of the nicest gents on the South East Racing circuit who is well thought of by many, Wilson recently turned 70 and has made this Saturday's Queanbeyan meeting his target for many of his gallopers.

Wilson has aimed most of his stable toward this meeting that coincides with a planned 'Owners Day' for his supporters and owners with a sponsored race aptly named 'Racing with Mates @ Tom Wilson's'.

Local trainer Tom Wilson - has five runners at Queanbeyan on Saturday

Stable Rep and Owner, David Reay said: "Tommy does a great job with a small team of horses, all purchased for modest prices, doing most of the work himself with little staff.

"He does get some help ofrom volunteers to minimise expenses that ensures every owner enjoys the experience of racing a horse.

"He receives great support from stablehands Colin and Shirley Myles and trackwork riders Zara Castellaz-Faico and Kim Shoard who have helped put the polish on all runners this Saturday.

"Tommy has a diverse bunch of owners who all like to connect over a drink or two coming from all walks of life, from defence veterans to shearers and everything in between," Reay added.

When Wilson knew he had many good chances set for this meeting he need not look elsewhere than accomplished and well travelled jockey Kody Nestor to take all five rides on the day.

Nestor has been riding with great success across multiple racing jurisdictions in recent weeks and comes to Queanbeyan having had valued experience on tight track circuits on similar tracks such as Queanbeyan.

Wilson is leaning toward veteran and stable favourite Battle Abbey being one of his better chances on the TAB program.

Wilson said: "Whilst Battle Abbey is staying at the same grade, the step up in distance on his home track and addition of a senior rider will only help him try and break his drought when taking on the BM58 event over 1460m.

"Battle Abbey's half-sister out of the Snitzel mare Madonnica called Closethedoordarcy also looks like a good chance coming back in distance to the 1460m SW Maiden.

"She was unlucky in previous starts not to get the right end of a photo and hopefully she'll breakthrough for her maiden victory."

After lacklustre runs on Canberra's Acton (synthetic track), Wilson believe's Giza can bounce back to the winner's stall in the BM50 1200m event despite going up in weight.

"After winning well at Sapphire Coast first-up she hasn't enjoyed racing on the synthetic surface and should enjoy being back on turf at Queanbeyan on Saturday despite the big step up in weight."

Recently purchased mare Avalon Lady is a watch and see in the 1000m SW Maiden who was recently purchased online and syndicated by Reay acquired from the Nathan Doyle stable.

"She may need the run and is looking for longer distances, but has been working well."

Wilson's other hope Spurline will go around in the BM50 1000m first-up and is a stayer resuming but not without a chance who could sprint well fresh.
