Vale Mr James ‘Patrick’ Finn

Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of Mr James Finn, 84, better known as Pat.

In the early years Mr Finn started off with a bakery at Coonamble where he also delved into the training of racehorses.

Pat then moved to Dubbo where he had stables and supplemented his training with a horse transport business.

“Pat was a good trainer and knew how to set a horse up for a win,” said well-known racecaller Col Hodges OAM.

“His main rider was Mal Worgan, but he also had plenty of success with Garry Lunn who rode many winners and is now a trainer at Dubbo.

“Pat then went to train at Hawkesbury and pulled off several long-priced plunges. Pat eventually returned to Dubbo and ran the Ploughman’s Rest Tavern about 18km from Dubbo.”

Pat Finn prepared 40 winners and 109 placegetters with his best gallopers being Will James (6 wins including wins at Gosford, Wellington and Dubbo), Runaway Frisco (2 wins at Wyong and Gunnedah), Canny Thief (Dubbo winner) and Cut the Tears (Dubbo winner).

NOTE: A celebration of life will be held from 10am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 14 Tooloon Street, Coonamble on Saturday, 25 November 2023.
