Surf Meets The Turf For XXXX Tuncurry-Forster Cup Day (Friday)

By Mark Brassel

Spring is now upon us and that means sun, surf and seafood, especially when at the north coast twin towns of Tuncurry-Forster.

Being just a 3½-hour drive from Sydney, Tuncurry-Forster is a popular holiday destination for fishing, swimming and surfing.

There'll be some great racing action at Tuncurry-Forster this Friday

And this Friday is a huge raceday for Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club with one of the highlights being the $40,000 XXXX Tuncurry-Forster Gold Cup.

“The bookings for our XXXX Gold Cup Day for gazebos and our Pavilion have been selling fast so we’re expecting a sizeable crowd for our first meeting of the spring,” said FTJC’s president, Garry McQuillan.

“Our Fashions on the Field is always a big event and this year it is sponsored by Sails Apartments Forster.

“And The Evermore Pearl has become a much sought-after race as connections receive gifts from Broken Bay Pearls for the winning owner, trainer and jockey.

“It’s a great way to spend a long weekend at the twin towns of Forster and Tuncurry and as usual we will have plenty of cold drinks and hot food.

“It’s coastal Country racing at its very best at the place where the surf meets the turf.

“Our XXXX Gold Cup is one of the biggest racing events held at Tuncurry-Forster, only second to the Country Championships in February.”

Two days later is Dubbo City Toyota and Gilgandra Toyota Dubbo Gold Cup Day with Dubbo Turf Club confident history will repeat itself.

“The 2022 Dubbo City Toyota and Gilgandra Toyota Gold Cup was the biggest Cup Day event hosted by our Club since the early 2000s,” revealed DTC’s GM, Sam Fitzgerald.

“Despite receiving 100 mils of rain in the days before last year’s event, we attracted strong fields with runners from major Metropolitan, Provincial and Country stables attending.

“We are forecasting another terrific Gold Cup Day in 2023 as we head into our feature spring racing schedule with the Cup worth a massive $100,000.

“We will have an excellent eight-race program with $360,000 in total prizemoney along with fashions, entertainment and some fantastic hospitality.

“And our Cup is also one of the qualifying races for the [$3 million] The Big Dance run at Royal Randwick [Tuesday 7 November].”

Other feature races on the day are the $50,000 Evergreen Turf Vincent Gordon Flying Handicap, $50,000 Arrowfield Country Magic Plate and the $40,000 Castlereagh Hotel Cup.

Next Saturday the Dubbo Gold Cup Calcutta will be held at Castlereagh Hotel from 6pm.

The Calcutta supports ‘Country Hope’ which provides emotional and financial support to country families who have a child diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.
