Steinmetz Sees Evil Looming Over Bathurst Cup (Sunday)

By John Schell

Warwick Farm trainer John Steinmetz is chasing a Bathurst Cup victory on Sunday with consistent performer Dr Evil with the galloper out to make it two wins on end after a last start Kensington win at Randwick when last produced.

Steinmetz has given the son of Casino Prince 75 starts, with the gelding having won nine races with 22 minor placings and more than $585,000 in prizemoney. He lines up in The Kings Hotel Bathurst Cup (1800m).

“It’s a Big Dance eligibility race and it would be great to get into that race,” said Steinmetz.

“But that’s not what we are chasing. It just looks to be a nice race for him.

“The 1800m looks like it will suit, and I could have taken him to Canterbury midweek, but he doesn’t race his best there despite having performed well there.”

Steinmetz has booked Kody Nestor to ride Dr Evil in the Bathurst Cup.

“It looks a nice race for him,” Steinmetz said.

“It’s a race that has fallen way a little with some other decent races being on over the last few days.

“We have a horse that is racing in good form and if he can maintain that then he should be very hard to hold out.”

Nacim Dilmi has last start Gosford winner Aix En Provence in the event with Andrew Adkins taking the ride.

Steinmetz is in line for a winning double when he again combines with Nestor when saddling up Good Once in the Agri West Bill Aspros Cup Benchmark 58 Showcase Handicap (1200m).

“Good Once is a horse that has always shown his share of ability,” said Steinmetz.

“He’s only won the one race but he’s normally around the placings and he should figure in the finish again.”

The $110,000 Bathurst Panthers Panorama is the richest race of the day at Bathurst, with the Matthew Dale trained and Ashley Morgan ridden Ringarosa looming as the hardest to beat from an ideal barrier.
