Stable Zeroes In On Gundagai After Suitable Barrier (Tuesday)

By John Schell

A huge three days will come to an end for the training combination of Barbara Joesph and Paul & Matt Jones, when Heavenly Legend ($4.60 on TAB) contests the Furphy Benchmark 58 Handicap (1180m) at Gundagai on Tuesday.

Heavenly Legend is a well-bred four-year-old gelding by Deep Field and out of Darazani, and is lining up for just his seventh start at Gundagai having started his career in the care of trainers Tony & Calvin McEvoy.

“He’s a nice horse that we have a bit of time for,” said Paul Jones, who is looking forward to getting home to the family after being at Forbes on Sunday, Moruya on Monday and Gundagai on Tuesday.

“We had him in at Forbes and Moruya but elected to go to Gundagai after he drew the best barrier there.

“Nick Heywood is booked to ride him which is an advantage, so all things are pointing to a good showing.”

The Joseph & Jones stable will have two other runners at Gundagai with Flying Jewel ($8.50) in the Hahn Premium Light C,G&E Maiden Plate (1400m) with Quayde Krogh in the saddle and Win The Day ($4.20) in the Tooheys Extra Dry Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1180m) with Jack Martin taking the ride.

“They were also both in at Forbes and Moruya, but we thought the races at Gundagai suited best so we’ve elected to run there,” said Jones.

“I’d be disappointed if they all don’t run well.”

Heywood had a good day at Forbes on Sunday when in addition to winning the Big Dance eligibility Forbes Cup on Osman, he also scored on Miss Jennifer and Stockholm.

Apart from riding Heavenly Legend at Gundagai, Heywood will also partner the Ben Brisbourne pair of Son Of A Boom ($7) in the Hahn Premium Light C,G&E Maiden Plate (1400m), and Debout Belle ($3.60 favourite) in the Kosciuszko Tickets On Sale Now F&M Maiden Plate (1400m).

His other two mounts at Gundagai are the Gary Colvin-prepared Aqualina’s Star ($5.50) in the NSW Jockeys Association Country Boosted Class 1 Handicap (1000m) and Acheson ($2.15 fav) for Keith Dryden in the National Jockeys Trust Class 2 Handicap (1400m).
