Singleton Hoping Filly's Trial Form's A Peach (Mudgee Sunday)

By Ray Hickson

Trial form doesn’t always work out but trainer Scott Singleton couldn’t have been any more encouraged by the outcome of the opening race at Tamworth on Friday as he prepares to send Another Peach to Mudgee on Sunday.

The filly matched motors with a fellow three-year-old called Tough Guy when winning a 1000m heat on her home track just under two weeks ago.

Tough Guy then cruised home as a $1.16 favourite and Singleton hopes Another Peach can do the same and break through in the McGrath Plate (1200m).

“I did actually go back and have a look at the trial after the race and they looked to trial fairly evenly together,’’ Singleton said.

“It makes you a bit more confident going there.”

Another Peach has been placed in three of her four starts in a preparation that was something of a learning curve for the filly.

Singleton said it’s likely she will appreciate getting out to a mile this time around, she was placed at 1500m before a spell, and is keen to get the maiden out of the way first-up.

“She’s had the two trials, she’s in winning sort of shape,’’ he said.

“It’s a good barrier and looks the right sort of race on paper so I’d walk away disappointed if she didn’t win.

“She’s always been a slow learner and I feel like she is galloping a bit better this time in now she’s found her feet.

“She doesn’t have a really good turn of foot but she keeps at it. She was always going to be better the older she got and you’d think there’s a race in her for sure without too much trouble.”

Stablemate Thor’s Lightning has his work cut out to topple Another Peach, Singleton said, but he will be a lot better suited out in distance after beating two home in a 900m scamper a month ago.

“I’d be surprised if he finishes in front of her but he can improve,’’ he said.

“He ran a couple of placings last prep over that sort of trip.”

A maiden win isn’t too far into the future for Last Lalique, who Singleton hopes can continue an upward trend in the Gooree Handicap (1400m).

The three-year-old improved into the placings at her third start filling the minor spot behind a promising type in Pindorama at Scone two weeks ago.

“She’s still working it out a little bit but getting out over a bit further every time,’’ he said.

“Mitch (Bell) seems happy enough to stick with her thinking there’s a race in her so hopefully it’s this one. She looks nice and fit and healthy and in her best possible shape.”

Meanwhile, Singleton is hoping a rise in distance is what Bush Telegraph needs to turn her form around in the Mudgee Florist Handicap (2000m).

The mare won twice at a mile last campaign but hasn’t reproduced the same sort of desire in four runs in her current campaign, beating one home over a mile at Dubbo last week.

Another Peach wins a Scone trial on June 25

“She’s been giving the impression she wants a trip, she was disappointing the other day,’’ Singleton said.

“She ran a little like she was disinterested but I think maybe she is looking for this trip.

“Things will be happening a bit slower and she will have a bit more time to think about having a go.”
