Seib's Ghost Walking The Highway To A Country Crossroad

By Ray Hickson

As trainer Danielle Seib begins her move to the nation’s capital she’s sending in-form gelding Ghost Walker to Randwick on Saturday to face a crossroad in the TAB Highway (1600m).

The Goulburn trainer is relocating to Canberra, where she has 31 boxes, starting this weekend with plans to have the move complete within the week.

Ghost Walker’s future path will become clearer to Seib following the Highway with her dilemma whether it’s a Country Championships campaign in early 2026 or the horse stays in work for the Country Classic next month.

“We’ll have to sit down with the owners after the weekend and see if we want to commit to going (to the Championships),’’ she said.

“He’s won from 1300m up to the mile, we just need to get his benchmark up a bit to fit our qualifier.

“We either go to the paddock, freshen up and look at the Country Championships or we keep him in work while he’s in form and stretch him out to 2000m.

“I’m not 100 per cent convinced he’ll run 2000m, his data profiles like he will but he has been so effective dropping to 1300m and racing well fresh. A high pressure 1400m would suit him.”

The five-year-old has won three of his 17 starts, coming off a confidence boosting win at Goulburn under 63.5kg last week, and will have a rematch with Poisen Point after running second in a 1500m Highway a month ago.

There’s a 1kg turnaround in Ghost Walker’s favour but it’s the change of venue that Seib has been looking for.

“He really struggles around Rosehill. Being such a large horse, Randwick is a big positive,’’ she said.

“The mile on a quick back up is a positive for him. Racing really helps him and a softer gate.

“He’s a strong horse which is why we were happy to run him with the weight and knowing we were going to have a short turnaround into this race.

“It’s good we were able to do that and give him a confidence boost.”

Ghost Walker has been to the Randwick mile once, for a close third behind stablemate Cable Express in the corresponding Highway last year.

Seib would like to think he’s an infinitely better horse now and a good chance to notch a first Highway win.

“He’s always had a lot of ability, we’ve had to tease it out of him a bit because he’s not the most straightforward at home,’’ she said.

“He is picking up his craft and I think that is evident in his consistency.

“He’s just starting to come of age as far as his racing brain goes and he’s more than capable of winning a Highway if he puts his best foot forward.”

Meanwhile, Seib will be keeping a close eye on the debut of $1.4 million colt Defensemen at Randwick given she trains his half-sister Threefold who will be in action in a 1000m Class 1 at Albury on Saturday.

Ghost Walker wins at Goulburn on October 16

Threefold, which cost $100,000, has won one from six and Seib said she can do a lot better than her unplaced effort first-up from 11 months off the scene.

“She was a little bit plain on return, she doesn’t help herself with her racing manners,’’ she said.

“I’d love to see her relax a bit more and do her best work late so we might have a look at tactics with her.”
