Racing Mates Boots A Winner At Wellington

By Phillip O'Brien

Sitting down for a chat can make all the difference in someone’s life.

That’s the message driven by Racing Mates, who hosted their latest BBQ get-together for Racing Participants at the Wellington Boot Showcase race meeting on Sunday 28th March.

Supported by Wellington Race Club, the gathering brought Racing Industry participants together for a chat, promoting the initiative of ‘mates looking out for mates’.

Ambassador Pat Webster, supported by his wife Christine Webster, hosted the event which has been branded a success by many for ‘giving back’ to the racing industry.

“It’s such a great concept to have these Racing Mates get-togethers,” racehorse trainer Brett Thompson declared.

“It’s important that we all stop every once in a while, to have a yarn and make sure that everyone is doing OK.”

Webster, a recently retired horse trainer, can relate to industry participants.

“Pat knows the ups and downs of racing, having been involved for so long himself,” Thompson said. “I think most participants can relate to that, and it’s great for Racing Mates to have Pat involved as an Ambassador.”

Wellington Race Club praised Racing Mates for supporting participants at their annual flagship race meeting.

“We were honoured to host Racing Mates and to have Pat here for our big day,” Club Secretary Dale Jones said. “It paved the way for Racing Mates to talk to our local trainers and strappers who may have a need for support or advice.

“Wellington Race Club looks forward to supporting Racing Mates again in the future.”

Founded by Racing NSW in 2016, Racing Mates hosts regular get-togethers across New South Wales and will continue.

Following a turbulent year for many during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no more important time than to check on your fellow workers.

“It's important for us all to check on our racing mates, and especially now after a difficult year for the whole community,” Webster said.

“Anyone out there who is struggling is more likely to reach out to a trusted peer or colleague for support. Racing Mates can assist in providing the link between those in need and the required support.”
