Potter Expects Vastly Improved Showing From Ken'ker (Sapphire Coast, Thursday)

By Graeme White

Canberra trainer Rob Potter is chasing consecutive Bermagui Cups on Thursday with Ken'ker at the Sapphire Coast.

Potter won the same race last year with Encompass as a $4 favourite and this time he has Ken'ker having his fifth start for him although you could actually say his fourth.

“He lost the rider two runs ago and then last time he was beaten nine lengths which was down on his previous runs for me,” Potter said.

“I’m hoping he can bounce back to his best. He would be a good chance on those earlier runs where he was placed at Queanbeyan and Goulburn off a long break.”

Ken'ker won two races with the Matthew Dale stable and was also under the care of Danny Beasley for a short time.

Sebastian’s Flyer ran third in the Bermagui Cup last year and will be fitter for three starts back from a spell in which he has finished fourth on each occasion.

The gelding has raced seven times at the Sapphire Coast for a win and three placings, but it’s his stablemate Sir Sublime who has a superior record.

He has raced four times at the Sapphire Coast for two wins and a third and is part-owned by a big syndicate including Sapphire Coast chief executive Rob Tweedie.

Sapphire Coast will back-up and race against next Tuesday heralding the start of a busy period of racing, according to Tweedie.

“We have a lot of things in place for next Tuesday with strong early bookings,” he said.

“We have also locked in champion jockey Damien Oliver as our guest for the Bega Cup Carnival on January 31 and February 1 plus we will be having our horse racing expo where the trainers gets to offer their horses to potential owners."

On the racing front, Tweedie said the track is in perfect order after recent rain and no racing for three months.

“The track couldn’t be better given we haven’t raced and we have a few meetings coming up between now and when the carnival starts,” he said.

The course is rated a Soft 5 but is expected to improve with decent weather forecast before the first of seven races.
