'Pocket Rocket' To Continue Solid Form At Nowra (Tues)

By Tony Megahey

Winona Costin, having one of her most successful and travelled season yet, is the “go to” jockey into Nowra’s TAB meeting on Tuesday where heavy form is the prerequisite.

The “pocket rocket” has a near full-book on the seven-race program including prime rides in her long and productive association with the Waterhouse & Bott stable and Paul Murray at Kembla, where she started her apprenticeship.

Winona Costin [pictured left] has the momentum of a recent Orange winning double and wins at Kembla and Gundagai over the weekend.

Winona’s best at Shoalhaven City Turf Club on Tuesday are wet trackers in Murray’s Globe Runner ($8.50 on TAB) resuming in the Sussex Inlet RSL Mdn (1100m), and Gold Witness ($5) resuming significantly off two trials for the Royal Randwick stables in the Coastal Waters BM 58 (1400m).

Costin is well acquainted with both.

Vitally, Globe Runner has heavy track placings last prep at Nowra and Kembla and Gold Witness a Muswellbrook soft track placing last prep before a big win in a Goulburn maiden.

“I rode them both last preps, wet form so good chances in the right races I think,” assessed Winona as she was arriving for Scone racing on Monday.

“Globe Runner is nice honest type, he’ll take improvement from it but Paul will have him forward enough and he’s an on-pacer that gets through the going.

“We’re drawn out on Gold Witness with a big weight, might get back but he did race on speed at Muswellbrook on soft at 1500m and it was a big win at Goulburn at 1600m.

“Looks a promising three-year-old old and has had the two trials into this.”

Early season Costin travelled to Tasmania and won the Group 3 Hobart Cup on Waterhouse/Bott’s Military Mission and also the Listed-Tasmanian Guineas on stablemate Russian Roni.

Obvious reasons for her relocating to Sydney from Kembla to ride work for Waterhouse and Bott with the pick of rides at the provincials.

Winona though has a fond association with south coast tracks and doubles have been regular enough at Nowra.

Also, Kembla where her family resides and where she was apprenticed to Murray, as well as the Sapphire Coast where she rode an amazing five winners in 2014, Moruya with four in 2016.

Meanwhile, Winona shortly has to have lengthy time off for facial surgery after serious injuries when kicked in the face at the barriers at Gundagai last season.

“I’m happy to have a full season without injury and something going wrong.”

Meanwhile Nowra is a Heavy 8 in overcast conditions with a clear day forecast for Tuesday topping 22 degrees.
