Olive Chases Fourth Successive Queanbeyan Cup (Friday)

By Graeme White

Could it happen again?

The odds say no, but the statistic sheet says yes about trainer Nick Olive winning a fourth straight Queanbeyan Cup (1600m) with Epaullo Creed on Friday.

Epaullo Creed captured the Adaminaby Cup last Saturday when again ridden by apprentice jockey Ryan Bradley whose parents share in the ownership of the well performed gelding.

“He has drawn the car park [Gate 14] but he is racing so well,” Olive said.

“He will get out in front and do his own thing from there.”

Olive also won the 2011 Queanbeyan Cup with Voice Commander and 13 days later took out the Wagga Cup.

Last year, he was successful with Just Go Bang and then two years straight with Invincible Dash.

Epaullo Creed ($14 on TAB) won the Cootamundra Cup three starts ago before holding on for success last week.

He has provided an array of highlights for his owners and Bradley who has an affinity for the old boy.

“I just love him. He has helped me out a lot in these big races,” he said. “I have won a few races on him and he always gives his best.”

Queanbeyan trainer Frank Cleary has scratched My Last Hooray but his son Joe has won the Cup three times and will be represented by second favourite Vermicella ($360).

He has engaged the services of experienced jockey Craig Newitt for the ride and also that on King Gutho ($4.80) in The Thunderbolt.

“I have put the blinkers on Vermicella and after two starts back she is right to go. She hasn’t missed a top three finish at Queanbeyan and is drawn right (gate two) to be right there,” he suggested.

King Gutho ran second in The Thundferbolt last year behind Extravagent Lad and is rated behind Starlight Girl ($3.20).

Meanwhile, a couple of missed starts and not having raced for 35 days doesn’t phase trainer Aaron Clarke about last start winner Bon Frankie ($7.50) in the Cup.

“He had a jump out after missing a start at Gundagai. He drew the inside gate when he won last time and from a good draw again (3) I expect him to be right there,” he said.

Clarke’s family won the 2007 Queanbeyan Cup with Monga Mist.

Topweight Louie’s Legacy ($10) is coming off a last start sixth beaten five lengths in the Gundagai Snake Gully Cup. Race jockey Nick Heywood won three races at Albury on Monday and will partner the horse.

His winners at Albury were all for trainer Matthew Dale who has the Queanbeyan Cup favourite Adolphus ($3.40) starting. Last start winning stablemates Mathrin ($9.50) and Dynamic One ($11) are also well in contention for the Cup.
