Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 5m

Race 1 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

A trio of Randwick-based runners look set to fight out the opener. Keen on Choisir three-year-old 6. Cross Creek who resumes off two quiet trials, the latest taken to the back, over-racing a bit before brushing home well off the speed under a tight hold. Should be ridden patiently by a very strong and good jockey, and be saved for one run.

Dangers: Progressive filly 2. Social Distancing only missed by a long neck resuming in a deeper provincial race, and despite a little weight rise, will be hard to stop if she can tuck in from an awkward gate. Rival filly 3. A Land Of is best of the rest at her second start.

How to play it: Cross Creek to win and quinella 2 and 6. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

The boys' edition is seemingly more cut and dried, with progressive three-year-old 1. Jimmy's Dream set to break through second-up in his second prep. Didn't miss by much after riding the speed at Newcastle, and should find the front here in a weaker race, despite carrying a big weight from a wide draw.

Dangers: Drawn one barrier inside, 2. Scream And Shout can give a big sight first-up for eight months off two improving trials. Gap to the rest but watch the betting on debutant two-year-olds 6. Charminton - by Charm Spirit - who won the second of two recent trials; and 7. Gerardjoseph - by Animal Kingdom - also off two forward trials.

How to play it: Jimmy's Dream to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 CLASS 2 HCP (1200m):

Very keen at the value on four-year-old 1. Maccomo resuming off two trials, with the blinkers removed. Weighted to his best, but stable has a good strike rate here, and this is an ideal starting point to the prep.

Dangers: Improving mare 2. Egyptian Missile almost looked home at Kembla third-up in a BM 64 thundering down the middle before just weakening late. That should top her off nicely for a race with less depth. Local three-year-old 4. To The Nines finished strongly to claim a country CL1 third-up, and even better suited back at home over more ground. Big watch on 3. Free State who resumes off a steady trial, with the blinkers removed.

How to play it: Maccomo each way. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Improving three-year-old 3. Caesars Palace can break through third-up stepping out to the mile. Should have finished closer in a better race at Newcastle, and like the 12-day back-up.

Dangers: Talented three-year-old 6. Go Troppo will likely spear across from a wide draw and try to find the front. Blinkers come off fourth-up, and hard fit for this journey. Be surprised if one of those two doesn't win, but keep safe 5. Don Arcangelo returning as a gelding off two steady trials, with blinkers on for the first time.

How to play it: Caesars Palace to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Caesars Palace runs fourth at Newcastle on April 15

Race 5 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m):

Got plenty of time for consistent local filly 5. Reelclass who was close-up in a handy BM 60 at Canberra. Genuine line finder whose only win so far was a dominant maiden success here three months back.

Dangers: No doubt Randwick filly and likely leader 6. Wholesome Delight is ready to win fourth-up coming back from three close efforts in provincial company. Draws well, with blinkers off and a nice drop in grade, but at the short odds must be a query over this distance. Improving filly 2. Majestic Wings is searching for more ground third-up after working home late in a handy CL1, although handicapper hasn't missed her with 60.5kg for a sole country maiden winner. Must include home filly 8. Salute To The Sun deep into the prep from a good draw.

How to play it: Reelclass to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 66 HCP (1000m):

Likely solid pace up front here, and that augurs well for under-rated mare 3. Look Only third-up from a handy draw. Form around her last two runs is good, and she can settle just off the speed here and finish best.

Dangers: Lightly raced three-year-old 4. Hurt Money is a clear threat resuming off two progressive trials. Has good tactical speed, and a smart fresh record. Kembla four-year-old 5. Young Heart is up sharply in weight, but drops back significantly in class from two Provincial C'ship qualifiers.

How to play it: Look Only to win and quinella 3 and 4. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1400m):

Canberra six-year-old 6. Trapper Tom can peak here third-up, with the leading country rider aboard.

Dangers: Improving five-year-old 9. Chairman's Choice gets back out to a suitable trip and will be running on; while 10. Jonjo's Comet drops in quality.

How to play it: Trapper Tom to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Trapper Tom runs third at Canberra on April 9
