Milligan And Worsnop Ready To Launch At Port Macaquarie (Sunday)

By Greg Prichard

The in-form combination of local trainer Glen Milligan and his stable apprentice Teighan Worsnop is well placed to strike again with Launch Sequence at Port Macquarie races on Sunday.

The pair will combine with three runners on the eight-race card, which has been transferred from Taree, and while Milligan expects them all to be competitive he believes Launch Sequence is by far his best winning chance.

The four-year-old gelding will contest the final event on the eight-race card, the Bakewell Haulage Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1200 metres.

Launch Sequence has drawn barrier eight, but would come in to five in a 14-horse field with the six emergencies out.

Milligan was very impressed by Launch Sequence’s last-start win at what was the horse’s third run for the stable after coming from Victoria, where he was trained by Mathew Ellerton.

Launch Sequence, ridden by Worsnop, settled down behind the leader in third place in a 1000-metre Maiden at Port Macquarie on January 3 and when the leader and the horse outside of it shifted away from the fence upon straightening Worsnop went to the inside.

The race was over as a contest at the 200-metre mark, when Launch Sequence shot clear to win as a $1.90 favourite should.

“This will be his first go beyond 1000 metres for us, but I reckon he’ll run the trip,” Milligan said.

“This race suits him. It was a good win at Port. He pricked his ears going to the line and won well. I’ve got a bit of time for the horse. I reckon he might be OK, this bloke.

“He’s just got to improve a bit coming off Port, but he can do that. He’s my best chance on the day.”

The Port Macquarie track was rated heavy when the meeting was transferred and Launch Sequence has not run on a heavy track in his nine-race career, but he has a win and a second from three starts on soft tracks.

“I reckon he’ll get through it,” Milligan said. “He appeals as a very versatile and adaptable horse.”

Milligan also has Bob’s Last One in the same race, but that horse has been out of form recently.

The other horses Milligan and Worsnop will combine with are Queen Calanthe in the Country Championships Preview 31 January Maiden Plate over 1000 metres and Wing Nut in the Stacks Law Firm Super Maiden Handicap over 1500 metres.

“They’re both still looking for their first win obviously and they’re up to double figures in their career starts now,” Milligan said.

“They’ve both run a few placings and I think they’ll be competitive, but I’d say they’re each-way chances.”

Milligan has done well over the Christmas-New Year period, racking up four winners from his last 11 starters.

All of those were ridden by Worsnop, who has also ridden two winners for other trainers during that period and has six winners from her last 18 rides.

“Teighan’s confidence is up and she’s riding well,” Milligan said. “Hopefully we can both keep it going.”
