John Schell's Tips For Scone Cup Day (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:20PM SCONE RSL MAIDEN HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

6. I Am Brave is a well-bred I Am Invincible filly on debut, and she’s had two trials for a win at Randwick and a third at Rosehill. She’s drawn the rails here and looks set to get the run of the race. She can kick off her career with a victory. 4. Apollo Ridge resumed from a spell with a second at Wyong when leading and not beaten far and another bold showing is expected. 1. City Gold Speed is on debut and has had one trial in which he was safely held. He’s in a good stable and is set to run well. 2. Favour The Bold is also on debut and has performed well in two runs either side of a break.

How to play it: I Am Brave WIN.

Race 2 - 12:55PM PRYDE'S COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1300 METRES)

7. Solitario debuted with a second at Armidale in December and resumes from a spell here having had a trial at Muswellbrook in which he finished second. He looks the one to beat here. 2. Ghaznavi has had two runs since joining a new stable and has run well in each of them. Another forward showing is on the cards. 3. Mad Harry can run into the placings, while 14. Bullant has been placed in two of her three starts including a third in the Wellington Boot.

How to play it: Solitario WIN.

Race 3 - 1:35PM INGLIS 2YO CHALLENGE (1100 METRES)

3. Cosmonaut is on debut after three trials, with the latest resulting in a fourth at Rosehill. He’s shown the talent to make an impact here and is from a form stable with Kerrin McEvoy taking the ride. 4. Demi God is also on debut and has had a good grounding with two trials in preparation. 6. So Rebellious ran third on debut at Bathurst and has place claims. 9. Shuttering has had two recent trials in preparation for this debut. She’s from a leading stable and is set to perform well.

How to play it: Cosmonaut EACH WAY.

Race 4 - 2:10PM GULLIVER'S CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Harlex won two trials before resuming from a spell with a dominant victory at Newcastle when he raced on the speed and bolted in. He should push forward again here and take plenty of running down. 9. Panta Rhei debuted with an easy Muswellbrook victory last November and then ran second at this track before being spelled. She’s had two trials leading into this first-up run and has drawn the rails. 2. Majestuoso Phoenix is lightly raced and has shown the talent to be a factor here, while 4. Aged Care has been ultra consistent in a five-start career and warrants respect fresh.

How to play it: Harlex WIN.

Race 5 - 2:50PM KIA ORA CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

1. Brave Call is an import resuming here for a new stable from a wide gate and has had two trials to prepare. He was a last start winner over a longer trip at Windsor in the UK in August last year. 2. Caltsar justified a short quote when winning on debut despite doing a little wrong. 3. Pelosa won well at Hawkesbury when second-up and then was nosed out on the Kensington track last time out. 6. Millie De Lune impressed with a last start Newcastle win and has claims based on that effort.

How to play it: Brave Call EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 3:25PM NEWGATE CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

4. Tasoraay backed up his solid form when breaking his maiden as a short-priced favourite at Newcastle on the Beaumont track before being spelled. He’s had two good trials leading into this return to racing 1. Botanica has a consistent record and shouldn’t be underestimated. 5. Reflecting Fame won two on end at the completion of his last campaign when scoring at Tamworth and Moree. He’s had two trials leading into this and won the latest. 17. Speedy Henry won his first two starts either side of a spell then ran home well in Highway grade at Randwick. He’ll be better suited on the pace here from a good draw.

How to play it: Tasoraay WIN.

Race 7 - 4:05PM DARLEY SCONE CUP (1600 METRES)

3. Amenable is a Group 1 performer at his best and he comes into this on the back of a second in the Newcastle Stakes before sixths in the Doncaster Prelude and a strong BM100 event at Randwick. Nash Rawiller takes the ride here and he’s from a form stable. 5. Tavi Time ran second in the Randwick event that Amenable ran sixth in, and he has a solid record and is one of the main chances. 8. West Of Africa was close-up when third in the Tamworth Cup and his previous form was rock solid. 15. Know Thyself has an outstanding record and has won the Country Championships and The Coast in addition to a Northern Wild Card and a BM78 at Randwick at his latest four starts.

How to play it: Amenable EACH WAY.

Race 8 - 4:40PM VINERY COUNTRY CUP - BENCHMARK 84 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

13. Like Lukey is a talented mare that found winning form last campaign when stringing together three straight victories. She was down the track on the Kensington track before the break and has had two trials leading into this return. 1. The Dramatist was back to winning form last time out and can run well here despite the wide alley. 5. Crop Duster ran home well for a last start second behind The Dramatist and that form should hold up here. 14. Rebel’s Edge finished second at Tamworth at his latest run and should get every chance from the inside draw.

How to play it: Like Lukey EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 4 (1) Harlex.
Race 6 (4) Tasoraay.

Best Value:
Race 7 (3) Amenable.
