John Schell's Tips For Coonabarabran Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:20PM COONABARABRAN BAKERY CLASS 3 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Green Run has been racing well with two third placings at Orange and Coonamble from his last two starts. He’s can settle close to the speed and although drawn awkwardly in an outside alley he should take plenty of beating in this line up. 7. Saint Philomena led throughout to score at Dubbo two starts back and followed that up with a fifth at Coonamble in the same race Green Run contested. 1. Autumn Song just beat home Green Run when they clashed in the Coonamble event and warrants thought again, while 2. Shadow Dane ran home well for a last start second at Muswellbrook and is worth including among the main chances.

How to play it: Green Run WIN.

Race 2 - 1:55PM REGGIE'S TATTERSALLS HOTEL BARADINE & PURSEHOUSE RURAL CLASS 1 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

6. My Kind Of Girl hit the line well to score at Dubbo before a midfield finish at Coonamble. She can bounce back to her best form here and give this a shake. 1. Charlie Bali has had two runs back from a spell for a fifth and a fourth and is ready to peak now. 7. Sunday ran second in the same race My Kind Of Girl contested last time out and has claims, while 2. Rhodesian Diamond has been racing well since resuming from a spell.

How to play it: My Kind Of Girl EACH WAY.

Race 3 - 2:30PM BARRON'S TYRE & MECHANICAL AND BIG SKY EXPERIENCES COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN SHOWCASE PLATE (900 METRES)

1. Good Time debuted with a seventh at Dubbo when settling back in the field. That run came on the back of a Wellington trial win and he is capable of improvement here. 10. Supreme Style has been placed in each of three starts and is fresh for this. 12. Incy Vincy was green on debut and shouldn’t be taken lightly. 9. Lite Side debuted with a fourth at Moree last December and resumes here after a recent trial.

How to play it: Good Time EACH WAY.

Race 4 - 3:05PM BRETT BOWMAN RACING & BREEDING HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY BRETT & KATRINA SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

5. Somerton Smart is having his first start and comes into this after a third in a Tamworth trial. He should be primed to run a bold race against these. 6. Bullant resumed from a spell with a second behind the handy Race To Arms at Coonamble and only needs to run up to that effort to be hard to hold out. 11. Ring My Bell resumes here for a new stable and has shown enough talent in her career to be rated a leading chance. 2. Fratianno has been placed in both runs since resuming from a spell and warrants respect.

How to play it: Somerton Smart WIN.

Race 5 - 3:40PM COONABARABRAN BOWLING CLUB CUP DAY SPRINT (1100 METRES)

5. Jet Empress is a talented mare with a good record, and she hasn’t been beaten far in each of three runs back from a spell including a first-up second at Dubbo. 4. Rouge Moulin has every chance when edged out in a tight finish at Coonamble last time out. He can run well again. 2. Stratified comes out of the same race as Rouge Moulin and is worth another chance. 7. Enterprise Legend will find this easier than a last start Warwick Farm effort.

How to play it: Jet Empress EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 4:20PM FUTURITY PASTORAL BARADINE CUP BM66 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

8. Mrs Bull has been racing in great form with a win at Dubbo being followed by a close-up last start second at Coonamble. She’s drawn to get a nice run here and should be hitting the line well again. 1. Dawn County has been racing well with three wins from his last four starts and only needs to maintain that form to be hard to hold out. 4. Slush Fund ran second to Mrs Bull at Dubbo before beating her at Coonamble. He has bright claims. 9. The Impeckable was close-up at Muswellbrook two starts ago and can show up with a repeat of that.

How to play it: Mrs Bull WIN.

Race 7 - 4:55PM IMPERIAL HOTEL COONABARABRAN SHOWCASE CUP (1600 METRES)

1. Who Ever Thought scored at Scone and Canterbury in successive races earlier this year and has since followed a fourth on the Kensington track at Randwick with a third at Warwick Farm and another third in the Dubbo Cup. That form is good for a race like this. 2. Lockdown Gamble fought on strongly when a last start second in the Coonamble Cup and has the talent to give this a shake. 5. Rajnish wasn’t too far away at Newcastle last time out and can be placed, while 3. Rhythm Is A Dancer is on the quick back up after running at Scone on Friday.

How to play it: Who Ever Thought WIN.

Race 8 - 5:30PM EXPO COUNTRY BOOSTED CLASS 2 PLATE (1200 METRES)

6. Trumpty Dumpty settled back in the field but hit the line hard to be beaten less than a length into fourth place behind Comongin at Coonamble when last produced. He had won at Narromine and been placed in his two runs prior to that. 7. Comongin is a promising galloper that is yet to miss a place from five starts. He has won twice, including the last start Coonamble triumph. 8. Cresta Run followed a string of Scone placings with a Moree victory and since took on Highway grade at Randwick. 11. Missy Moss is resuming from a spell on the back of a second in a Bathurst trial and is handy on her day.

How to play it: Trumpty Dumpty EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 6 (8) Mrs Bull.
Race 7 (1) Who Ever Thought.

Best Value:
Race 8 (6) Trumpty Dumpty.
