Grills Looking For More Success At Tamworth & Quirindi

By Geoff Newling

Tamworth trainer Sue Grills will target more success at Tuesday’s Tamworth meeting and Friday’s Quirindi Cup after nearly pulling off a metro double at Warwick Farm on Saturday. Grills has three runners – Clever Chloe, As Yawood and Assurity – in at Tamworth on Tuesday and another “four or five for the Quirindi Cup meeting” on Friday.

She believes her trio of Tamworth runners will run good races and hopes for success at Friday’s Akubra Quirindi Cup meeting: “I like Quirindi, it has always been a good track,” Sue Grills said Sunday.

Nominations for Quirindi close 11am Monday for a Cup meeting dispensing record prizemoney of $285,000. Leading the way is the $50,000 Akubra Quirindi Showcase Cup (1600m) while the Quirindi RSL Club Lightning (1100m) and the Regional Bank Australia Showcase Maiden (1200m) are worth $40,000.

A $35,000 Emirates Park River Ridge 2YO Showcase Handicap (1100m) is also worth $35,000 on an eight-race TAB card where the other four races are all Showcase races worth $30,000.

It’s a rich day and one Sue Grills is looking forward to after celebrating a sixth race win with Fickle Folly in Sydney on Saturday where the four-year-year-old daughter of Nicconi won the $100,000 Sledmere Stud Dash (1000m) in brilliant fashion. She also Under The Thumb in the $60,000 TAB Highway Handicap and he ran a big second to Star Boy.

“He had to push his way out,” Sue Grills said. “We also had to give the winner 3kg. If he could have got out straight away he might have won but I’m still very happy with his run.”

She said he might stay in and run at the Sunday, March 4 Armidale Cup meeting.

“He likes to be fresh but I might keep him in for the Armidale Newmarket,” she said. “It a very good day for me though. She (Fickle Folly) blitzed them. She’s as tough as old boots and tries her heart out every time.”

The chestnut daughter of Nicconi has now won six of her 16 starts for $223,430 in prizemoney and looks likely she will return to Sydney in a fortnight for a similar benchmarked 90 handicap over the sprint distance.
