Gollan Eyes Hit And Run Cup Raid With Castillian (Murwillumbah Thursday)

By John Schell

Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is out to make a hit and run raid across the NSW border on Thursday when talented prospect Castillian lines up in the $85,000 Riverview Hotel Murwillumbah Cup (1550m).

Gollan has targeted the Big Dance eligibility event with Castillian, after the race was postponed last week due to the big wet making the track unsuitable for racing.

The Murwillumbah track was still rated a Heavy 10 on Wednesday, but Gollan expects to adapt to the conditions and continue his good run of form.

“He’s been placed in two of his four heavy track runs,” Gollan said of Castillian, which is a six-year-old by Per Incanto that has won five of 33 starts with a further 10 placings.

“Three of his wins have been on soft tracks so we know that he gets through those conditions well.”

Castillian won two in a row at Doomben and Ipswich before a last start second at Doomben behind Murwillumbah Cup rival Super Duck.

“His form has been very good so he deserves his chance in the Murwillumbah Cup,” said Gollan.

“Angela Jones has been on him in his last two starts and she knows him well. Angela will stick with him at Murwillumbah, and he’s drawn well to get the run of the race from gate two.”

Castillian will be the only runner for Gollan at Murwillumbah and the only ride for Jones.

They will face stern opposition from local trainer Matthew Dunn who has two runners in the race in the shape of Cranky Harry, to be ridden by apprentice Jett Newman, and form galloper Resurrected, which has the services of jockey Jake Bayliss.

Cranky Harry finished second at Doomben two starts ago before failing to fire when well beaten in the Coffs Harbour Cup.

Resurrected has struck winning form of late having scored four victories on end since finishing second at Ipswich in April.

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees will attempt to win the Murwillumbah Cup with the Australian Bloodstock raced Inver Park, which has been down the track in two runs at Doomben and the Gold Coast since resuming from a spell.
