Gayna's Hoping For The Luck Of The Irish (Bathurst)

By Tony Megahey

Gayna Williams, a regular Country Championships and TAB Highway contender, invariably presents at home track Bathurst and offers value combining with in-form Irish jockeys Ellen Hennessy and Louise Day at Tuesday’s TAB meeting.

With the momentum of recent city winners and regional success, the in-demand lightweights have two rides each for Gayna who is represented throughout the seven-race program on a rain-affected surface.

But more importantly for Gayna, Zoo Station, one of the finest sprinters in regional racing, is back in work after a career threatening tendon injury when an early favourite for the Country Championships Final last season at Royal Randwick.

“Latest scans are all clear, she’s back in slow work and is something to really look forward to,” Gayna enthused.

“I’ve learned over the years you give the special ones all the time they need and more.”

Meanwhile, Hennessy and Day also ride fancied runners in the fifth race, the Kennard’s Hire Maiden for the high-profile Maher & Eustace, and Neasham stables, respectively with Matronymic ($9.50 on TAB) and Super Sprockett ($6.50).

“Happy to have them on the form they’re in, we’ve nice chances on the day and horses from Mark Newnham (Hot Extraction race 4 - $10) and Gary Portelli (Inessa race 5 - $31) that are progressing but others are more forward,” Gayna offered.

Her best on recent form is Own the Night ($6.50) with Hennessy in race three. Own the Night has been placed twice since a strong Dubbo maiden win.

“Consistent enough and race fit - the way he’s been closing at 1000m out to 1300m should suit.”

Typically the Bjorn Baker Warwick Farm stables has form and numbers and will provide several favourites with a big watch on debut maidens primed by winning trials.

Baker has trained regular trebles and doubles at Bathurst and even a phenomenal five at a 2017 meeting combining with now retired great, Greg Ryan.

Bathurst is currently a Soft 5 but with fine weather forecast an upgrade is likely.
