Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 9 # 5 – PRIVATE EYE

He's very well placed here under the race conditions and brings a key fitness edge over his rivals. The gelding was suited last start, leading at a slow pace, but always looked in control when winning at Caulfield with style. Further, he showed a turn of foot and maintained that finishing speed to the line, clocking solid late splits. He brings a proven profile into this event, and his last-start figure suggests he's come back near career-best form. Additionally, he'll roll forward with Nash Rawiller on from the awkward draw and expect him to be tough to get past.

ROYAL RANDWICK – BEST BET: Race 1 # 1 – DENMAN STAR

He's been racing well/consistently this prep and is well-placed down in grade with James McDonald to ride. The five-year-old's run had merit two back, and then he had multiple excuses last start in a high-rating race, with the form since being proven. He can settle much closer from the inside draw, back onto a drier surface suits, and expecting him to bounce back into the winner's stall.

ROYAL RANDWICK – VALUE BET: Race 5 # 6 – STATE OF AMERICA

He can improve sharply second-up as his pattern suggests, and he drops in grade with a positive race setup. The gelding wasn't suited on a heavy surface first-up, and in his past two preparations, his second-up run produced a figure that can put him in the finish for Saturday's race. He can settle closer with the anticipated genuine tempo suiting, and the switch to Randwick is ideal. In addition, the claim brings him into it, the dry track suits, and he represents value.

MUDGEE SUNDAY – COUNTRY PICK: Race 7 # 2 – BLEND OF THREE

He was impressive first-up for his new trainer, Cameron Crockett, and bolted in running a solid time relative to the day at Scone. He had every chance but travelled well throughout and showed a sharp turn of foot, putting his rivals away in a matter of strides. The gelding can only benefit from the run, brings the best last start figure and will appreciate the rise to 1200m from a soft draw.
