Drought Relief To NSW Racing Industry Participants

The Australian Turf Club Foundation awarded its first round of drought relief funds to the Racing Industry participants across several towns in the states Central and Western Districts.

Racing NSW Country Chairman, Bob Pavitt, praised the initiative and on behalf of the Racing NSW Country Board thanked the ATC for their support of the Racing Industry and in particular the Central and Western Districts.

"The Central and Western Districts region has experienced trying conditions through one of the worst droughts in history," Mr Pavitt said.

"The donations have been well received during times of high emotions and the ATC should be congratulated on providing these districts with support that brings the industry together."

Thoroughbred trainers in Nyngan, Trangie, Narromine, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Coonamble and Cobar have received bales of hay and Walgett Jockey Club will receive funds for the provision of water.

The first stage of the drought relief has already seen more then $60,000 raised by the Australian Turf Club Foundation.

Aussie Helpers, an organisation which aids drought relief, has also helped to raise and distribute funds.

Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V’landys AM said the ATC Foundation funds were in addition to the $500,000 paid by Racing NSW to drought-affected participants.

“Racing NSW is most pleased to further help racing industry participants for this very worthy cause,” Mr V’landys AM said.

Dubbo Turf Club General Manager, Vincent Gordon, reflected on the day and said the assistance to trainers such is being offered by the ATC Foundation will always be greatly appreciated as the effects of the extended period of drought continue to hit hard in Western Racing.

"Having the ATC Head of Membership & Community Engagement, Steve McMahon, on course during the distribution and talking to participants about their circumstances was a terrific sign of support by the industry," Mr Gordon said.

The ATC will continue to invite expressions of interest from NSW Thoroughbred Racing Clubs and participants for the allocation of future funds raised.
