Connections Hoping To Retrieve The One That Got Away (Albury Friday)

By Graeme White

A week can be a long time in racing, just ask the connections of Canny Hell after he lost a feature race at Wagga last Friday on protest.

Canny Hell edged out Villasuarus in the Stan Sadlier Stakes but missed out on the major prize after drifting out in the straight and impeding the promoted winner.

The giant gelding can rectify the ledger in the feature race at Albury on Friday in the DLG Aluminium & Glazing Twilight (1175m).

It was only after further consideration that trainer Kym Davidson elected to start at Albury when he had originally scheduled to run in the Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai a week later.

“The Snake Gully Cup is going to be hard to get into for a lot of horses, with the ratings of horses that are being mentioned, so I thought it was best to start this week,” Davidson said.

“It was one of those things that happened last week and I was glad to see him race so well and show his best again.

“Even though he lost on protest, I thought he did a big job with the big weight. This time, I’ve elected to go with the claim for Brittany Button.”

Fellow Albury galloper Tap ‘N' Run has drawn in gate 9 with Canny Hell to jump from the extreme outside alley in gate 10.

There have been a few editions of The Twilight which was taken out last year by Fine Vintage.

“It is a race we want to try and grow and we think it works in well a week out from the Snake Gullly Cup,” said Steve Hetherton, Albury Racing Club's Chief Executive.

Albury, with the support of Racing NSW, has funded major works at the course which now boasts a new training track and modern white fencing throughout much of the course.

The feature race is named The Twilight as the meeting traditional starts mid-afternoon, this time at 2.45pm with the last race at 7pm.

Last start winner, Zethus, will also line up after defeating Tap ‘N' Run by almost two lengths on 25 October. Another contender is Master of Disguise who will wear blinkers for the first time and won her only start at Albury.

Yam won consecutive races before a mini-break and made up many lengths when a closing fifth at Bendigo on 29 October. The five-year-old is another of the chances along with stablemate Big Day Out, who is a last start winner.

Vella Fox is also a last start winner at Canberra and has already taken five victories from 17 starts: “He is racing extra well and this looks an ideal race for him the way he is going,” said trainer Gratz Vella.

Meanwhile, the race of the day could be The HIB Insurance Class 2 1400m. Autumn Break will start favourite after winning his only two starts, while Bon Holler is one of the more promising gallopers in the Donna Scott stable.

Only a week ago, Sonic Scene was successful at Wagga but has to turn around a recent loss to Autumn Break at Albury.

“Autmn Break has looked the goods so far and I have high hopes for him going into the Country Championships,” Davidson said.

Another of the chances Kendalia has raced once for current trainer Matthew Dale, finishing a close second to Savaii who has won his three starts.

Scott has plans to run Villasaurus in the Snake Gully Cup and will be also keen to see stable newcomer Doubtfree perform well in the Choices Flooring Wodonga Benchmark 58 (1175m).

Doubtfree ran second at his latest behind Autumn Break when prepared by Pat Widdup who has retired from training.

Albury trainer Nadine Cameron will be hoping her run of success continues with Extra Hands in the Allure Lash & Beauty Bar Maiden Plate (1400m).

The trainer has won with her past two starters at Wangaratta with Kazotski while $61 chance Bargino triumphed at the most recent Albury meeting.
