Cavanough Has Harmony Tuned For Success (Muswellbrook Monday)

By Ray Hickson

Trainer Brett Cavanough would like to think he’s done his job with Hibiki Harmony and found a race she can win at Muswellbrook on Monday.

The four-year-old mare has already won three of her 16 starts so she’s doing a great job for her owners but Cavanough says it’s a much easier task in the In Memory Of Ray Webber Handicap (1500m) than she’s faced in recent starts.

Hibiki Harmony has been racing in Benchmark 66 company of late, running fourth at Muswellbrook two weeks ago, and drops in grade on that.

“It looks the right race on paper,’’ Cavanough said.

“I’d like to get some weight relief for her, that’s what I’m struggling for.

“She’s up for that journey, she’s fit and well and deep into the prep and she’ll go to the races short in the market I would assume.”

While the mare led and was run down last start Cavanough is happier stepping her back up beyond the 1450m she tackled last time out.

Braith Nock is back on board and she’ll carry 61kg which is the main concern for the trainer.

“Mitchell (Bell) got off last start and said run this in a 1500m/1600m race and she’s ready to win,’’ he said.

The Scone trainer, who now trains in partnership with daughter Georgie, has two first starters stepping out in four-year-old Souls Companion and year younger Magic Merlin in the Ladies Day 2 Nov Plate (1280m).

The former trialled behind subsequent Kosciuszko winner Clear Thinking.

He said both horses are shaping as though a mile will bring out their best but he’s expecting to get a glimpse of their potential.

“He’s been an immature guy all along, he trialled well the other day with a bunch of horses obviously Clear Thinking was up in front,” Cavanough said of Souls Companion.

“She won the trial which you would expect and I thought he trialled well. He’s been a slow maturer, hence his age having his first start.

“We’ll keep stepping him up in trip until he gets to a mile and he might be a horse of the future.”

Magic Merlin trialled behind the promising Autumn King earlier this month at his second trial and he’s also a work in progress.

“I thought his first trial was good, a piece of work at home weas really good then in his next trial I think we rode him too close to the speed and didn’t come on,’’ he said.

“He’ll want 1400m to a mile as well, they’ll be ridden quiet to get home.”

Capsity has her first run since a handy debut placing back in June in the In Memory Of Rita And Ron Englebrecht Handicap (900m).

She had her second trial for the prep on Monday and Cavanough says she can only run well.

“She trialled well earlier in the week so I’m happy with her,” he said.

“It’s the right race for her, she should put in a forward showing with two trials under her belt.”
