All Beefed Up For A Big Week Of Celebrations (Now At Lismore)

By Mark Brassel

The World’s largest meat try at 180kg will be on offer during Casino’s Beef Week. The massive meat tray provided by Our Cow includes a chest freezer donated by Oaten’s Furniture & Homewares.

However, Friday’s eight-race Casino Country Showcase meeting has this morning been moved to Lismore after track concerns following a Stewards inspection.

There'll be some great racing on Friday - now at Lismore

Beef Week celebrations commenced on Saturday and stretch until Tuesday 30 May.

One of the main focal points was going to be Friday’s race card highlighted by the $45,000 Casino Returned Servicemen’s Memorial Club Beef Week Cup over 1400m with the meeting at Lismore still providing $265,000 in prizemoney.

Casino’s Beef Week has an incredible list of events including a rodeo, farmers market, mini train rides, live music, busking competition, chef’s masterclass, golf comp, high tea, breakfast with the butchers, sausage judging contest, cow pat lotto, fittest farmer challenge, pie eating contest, orchid show and craft markets.

Gunnedah Jockey Club, for the first time on Sunday, will host a qualifying race for the $3m Big Dance at Royal Randwick in November.

“We are extremely happy and feel privileged to have our Cup included on The Big Dance qualifying list,” said Lyn Tongue, secretary/manager of GJC.

“Our club is only small and to think that the winner of our Cup has the chance to go into a $3 million race in unbelievable.

“We are very grateful to Racing NSW for including our Cup this year in this wonderful concept.

“On raceday we will run a Fashions on the Field, TAB, full bar, live music and free shuttle buses. Entry is $15 and under 18s free.

“And marquee tickets are still available that include course entry and a racebook, a hot buffet lunch and marquee seating.

“The weekend kicks off on Saturday [27 May] with a Cup Calcutta at the Railway Hotel from 6:30pm with trainer Greg Hickman the special guest.”

Gunnedah’s Country Showcase meeting will have eight races highlighted by the $40,000 Gunnedah Cup (1600m) supported by the $34,000 Lightning Showcase Handicap (1000m).

The day will provide a total of $264,000 in prizemoney.
