Benchmark Programming and Handicapping update (from 1st Oct '09)

As has been extensively publicised during the past month Benchmark Programming and Merit Based Handicapping will come into effect in New South Wales as of 1st October 2009.

The following updated information applies:

Racing NSW today releases its Benchmark Programming and Handicapping (BPaH) Policy, formatted after final Industry Consulation in recent weeks and final developments in the Benchmark system. Please click here to view the BPaH Policy

Further to the advice that each horse would be re-assessed and allotted a starting Benchmark figure using the merit based system, on 23/24 September all NSW trainers should receive by mail a list of their current horses that have raced during the past four months with their new Benchmark figure as allocated on 18th September 2009 - excluding Maidens with 3 starts or less who do not yet have an established form profile.

This Benchmark figure supersedes the Rating that was formerly allotted to each horse.

Any horses that are not on the list and for future Benchmark figures of all horses please refer to the Racing NSW website, click on the Handicapping section (bottom left of screen) and then the “Find Horse Benchmark“. This information will be available on the website from the 25th September 2009.

As advised in the early Media Releases, Benchmark figures for horses, particularly Country performed, may vary markedly from previous Ratings. This re-assessment is necessary to launch the new Benchmark system where horses are assessed against the entire New South Wales horse population. Please click here to view the Introduction to Benchmarking Document

Racing NSW is also pleased to confirm the appointment of former leading Trainer Mr Kerry Jordan to the position of Racing Liaison Officer – Handicapping and Programming. Mr Jordan commences his role with Racing NSW on 23 September 2009 and will be available on 9551 7500.
