Markwell Aiming To Get Second Horse Into Provincial Championships Final

Kembla Grange horses have five of the nine places in the Provincial Championships Final after Pomelo’s easy win at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and they will have home track advantage for the next heat on Thursday.

Gwenda Markwell will look to add Louie Sea Kay, which is adept on the soft ground expected on Thursday, to her team for the Final in the Bede Murray Provincial Championships heat.

“We put him away with this race in mind after a couple of good runs in town in the summer,” Markwell said.

Markwell has the ruling favourite for the final in Pomelo after he streeted his rivals in the Gosford heat, which had to rescheduled to Golden Slipper day.

“He had a good jump out earlier in the week but missed a bit of work later on because of the rain, so that a bit of worry,” Markwell said. “He is a pretty good horse and I think he is going to be better at 1400m in the final.

“Even though he has won his three starts this time in he is still improving and the plan was to have him peak for the final, which we have targeted.”

Pomelo led all-the-way beating the Kerry Parker-trained Heavenly Anna for the second Kembla quinella of the series after Noble Joey beat Better Not Blue at Wyong. Robert and Luke Price, who train Noble Joey, also prepared Budderoo Knight, which qualified by running second in the Hawkesbury heat.

Kembla has a capacity 16-horse field with four emergencies showing the popularity of the Provincial Championships.

Kembla track Dave Anderson believes the meeting will go ahead despite losing Saturday’s meeting because of the big wet.

“The track is improving all the time and is near back to a heavy 9, which is good considering the rain we have had,” Anderson said. “We don’t need any more rain because there is nowhere for it to go but I would be confident of racing on Thursday but it will be a heavy track.”
