Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

The Event

What is The Golden Mingle?

The Golden Mingle is a singles event like no other — set against the backdrop of one of Australia's biggest race days, The Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick.

It's not speed dating. It's not awkward name tags and forced small talk. It's a full race day experience built for people who are open to something — good conversation, a great day out or maybe something more.

Where do I buy tickets?

Tickets are available at theraces.com.au. Grab yours early — this one sells out.

Do I have to be single to attend?

Not at all. The Golden Mingle is open to everyone — single, taken or somewhere in between.... That's what the badge colours are for!

Is there an age limit?

The Golden Mingle is designed for adults, but here's the official breakdown:

  • Under 18s are welcome at the racecourse only when accompanied by a Legal Guardian (parent, step-parent or guardian) or someone acting in loco parentis — that's someone aged 25 or older who assumes parental responsibility and can verify their relationship to the minor if asked by the ATC
What is the dress code?

Race day attire. Think cute, stylish and occasion-appropriate. This is Royal Randwick — dress like you mean it.

Badges & The Mingle Zone

On The Day

Where do I go when I arrive?

Head straight to the Mingle Zone in the Winx Stand to get the most out of the day. Badges are available at all entry gates and inside the Mingle Zone — arrive early and collect yours on your way in.

What do the badge colours mean?

Your badge lets everyone know your status before anyone has to say a word.

What is the Mingle Zone?

Tucked inside the Winx Stand at Royal Randwick, the Mingle Zone is where the day really comes alive. Live DJs, love tarot readings and Love Potion cocktails set the scene — good music, better people and zero reason to be anywhere else.

Do I need to stay in the Mingle Zone the whole time?

Not at all. The Mingle Zone is your home base — come and go as you please. Watch the races, grab a drink, then come back. The energy will be there all day.

New To The Races?

Racing 101

I've never been to the races — how does the day actually work?

Easier than it looks. Here's the rundown:

  • 10 races across Golden Eagle Day, roughly 30 minutes apart
  • Head to the Theatre of the Horse before each race to see the horses up close
  • Get to the fence a few minutes before the jump
  • Between races is where the day happens — drinks, the Mingle Zone, good people
  • Screens around the course keep you across odds, fields and replays
How do I put a bet on?

Simple — no minimum, so a couple of dollars is fine.

  • Head to a TAB window or self-service kiosk, found throughout the venue
  • Tell them the race number, your horse's name or number and your bet amount
  • Hold onto your ticket — you'll need it to collect any winnings

Easiest bets to start with:

  • Win — your horse finishes first
  • Place — your horse finishes in the top 2–4, depending on field size

Prefer your phone? Download the TAB app and set up an account beforehand.

What is Golden Eagle Day?

One of Sydney's biggest race days, held at Royal Randwick. The feature race — The Golden Eagle — is a $10 million event exclusively for four-year-olds, making it the second-richest race in the country. Big crowds, big fashion, festival atmosphere. The perfect stage for The Golden Mingle.

Do I need to know anything about horses to enjoy the day?

Nope. Plenty of people at The Golden Mingle will be there for the atmosphere and the mingling rather than the form guide. Pick a horse because you like its name or its colours — that's a totally valid strategy, and a great conversation starter too.

What time does racing start and finish?

Public Gates open at 10:30am, with the first race kicking off at 12:10pm and the last race at 6:00pm.

What is a form guide?

A form guide lists every horse running that day, along with details like its recent results, jockey, barrier position and odds. You can pick one up on course or check it on the TAB app — but honestly, the best tips at The Golden Mingle will come from the stranger standing next to you at the fence.

Do I need cash to place a bet?

Not necessarily — most on-course TAB windows and kiosks accept card as well as cash, and the TAB app lets you bet straight from your phone if you've got an account. Cash can still be handy for quick, smaller bets between races.

What is the Theatre of the Horse?

The Theatre of the Horse is where the horses are walked and shown off before each race, giving you a close-up look at the field, the trainers and the jockeys in their colours. It's a great pre-race stop — and a good excuse to strike up a conversation with whoever's standing next to you.
