John Schell's Selections For Hawkesbury Races (Thursday)

By John Schell

The track is rated a Soft 6 with the rail in the TRUE position. There's a slight chance of a shower or two on a partly cloudy raceday with a top of 19 degrees.

Race 1 - 12:00PM HRC MOTEL MAIDEN PLATE (1800M)

2. DONATELLO ($1.55 favourite on TAB) is a former New Zealander that has had two starts since arriving in Australia for a fourth on the Kensington Track and a latest fifth at Randwick behind Agent Zero. He was beaten less than a length in that event and sticks at the same distance in this. He looks set to break through with a win. 3. Scoop The Pool ($3.50) has a solid record with five placings from nine starts and hit the line well when a last start second at Newcastle. This looks well within his reach. 6. Aurora Effect ($7.50) ran well enough when a last start third at this track and only needs to run up to that to figure in the placings again. 1. Master Of War ($13) has been placed in four of eight starts and has minor money claims.

Race 2 - 12:35PM FAMILY FUNDAY 19 JULY F & M MAIDEN PLATE (1100M)

4. MIND YA BIZZ ($2.80 fav) was placed in her first two starts at Gosford and this track before finishing fourth in two subsequent runs at Gosford and Canterbury. She resumes from a spell in this on the back of two trials and looks well suited to break her maiden. 6. Rising Revolution ($3.40) was placed on debut at this track last September and has had a trial in preparation for this return to racing. 7. Stardust Memories ($3.30) was midfield as favourite on debut at Kembla Grange and gets another chance to show up here. 9. Scuro Star ($7.50) has trialled well leading into this race debut and should be considered among the main chances.

Race 3 - 1:10PM DE BORTOLI WINES MIDWAY MAIDEN HANDICAP (1400M)

1. JONSON ($3.20) ran a good race when resuming from a spell with a close-up second placing at Gosford. He backed that up with a third at Newcastle after leading and only needs to hold that form to be the one to beat here. 3. Yeszem ($2.90 fav) followed a couple of placings with a last start flop at Parkes but can lift on that effort. 5. Heard Of Him ($3.60) ran fourth on debut at Bathurst and should be better for the experience. 10. Yes Arnie ($8) has a couple of recent placings to his name and is far from the worst.

Race 4 - 1:50PM XXXX GOLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500M)

1. ABANDONMENT ($3.60 fav) is a former Kiwi that had a win and two placings back in New Zealand. He resumes here for a new stable on the back of two trials and looks set to run well over this trip first-up from the good gate. 2. Call Me Mojo ($5.50) resumed from a long spell with a Canberra win and followed that up with a sixth on the Illawarra Grange track. 6. Obsidian Dream ($3.70) led to score a last start win at this track and can be thereabouts again. 5. Hammoon Heroine ($4.60) has only missed a place once from six starts.

Race 5 - 2:25PM DAVO'S DASH 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE (1000M)

3. MAJESTIC LEGEND ($4) is resuming from a spell after having two recent trials. She’s been placed in two of six starts and has the talent to give this a shake. 4. Monocru ($5.50) has been in the minor placings in two of four starts and bears close watching. 5. Radicals ($6.50) is on debut and has had a number of trials to be prepared for what is expected to be a bold showing. 1. Cosmic Order ($5.50) debuted with a midfield Newcastle effort and can be in the money in this line-up.

Race 6 - 3:05PM PIONEER SERVICES PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1300M)

2. SAPLING ($1.90 fav) has had two starts back from a spell for a fifth at Hawkesbury and a fourth at Gosford and had a trial in between. She’s a Wyong maiden winner and gets her chance to score again against these. 1. Rustemo ($3.90) raced on the speed and fought on too well to score at Scone when last produced and has claims again. 8. Turning Circle ($6) has performed well in three runs since scoring at Wyong and warrants respect. 4. Hunter One ($5.50) scored at Moruya when resuming and has been placed in all three starts since then.

Race 7 - 3:40PM ELITE SAND & SOIL 5YO & UP BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1100M)

2. PRINZERRO ($6) was down the course on resumption on the Kensington Track but ran better when a last start seventh at Newcastle after racing on the speed. He’s worth another chance here and has the ability at best to be winning this. 6. Gandalf ($6) is resuming here and ran second in a recent trial at Gosford behind Shaggy in preparation. 3. Still Alice ($6.50) won at Gosford before failing at Randwick and then being spelled. She resumes here after two trials and bears close watching. 4. Light Infantry ($4 fav) is a last start Parkes winner that has the talent to run well.

How to play it: Prinzerro EACH-WAY

Race 8 - 4:20PM CLARENDON TAVERN 5YO & UP BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1800M)

2. CLASSIC DEEL ($4.60) has had two runs back from a lengthy spell for a sixth and a fourth at Newcastle. She looks set to peak third-up over this distance and looks a leading contender. 8. Marsabit ($3.20 fav) was placed at Kembla Grange before tackling tougher opposition at Rosehill when last produced and is better suited here. 9. Koning ($8) strips fitter for a first-up effort at this track and is capable of improving sharply. 1. Coto De Caza ($12) was safely held at Newcastle when resuming but can lift on that performance in this.
