Waugh Hoping Debutante Filly Burns Brightly At Newcastle (Saturday)

By John Schell

Wyong trainer Kim Waugh will unveil a promising filly at Saturday’s Newcastle Beaumont meeting when the unraced Brightburn ($1.55 favourite on TAB) steps out for the first time.

A three-year-old filly by Deep Field and out of the mare Prahaar, Brightburn makes her debut in the All Metal Roofing F&M Maiden Plate (1150m) with Keagan Latham taking the ride.

Brightburn has stepped out in two barrier trials and won each of them at Wyong and Gosford, and Waugh expects the filly to be prominent in Saturday’s event.

“She’s a filly that has shown plenty of potential at home,” said Waugh.

“A really nice daughter of Deep Field that has done everything right so far. Her trials have been good.

"Jay Ford and Reece Jones rode her in the two trials, and both had good things to say about her.

“Keagan [Latham] takes the reins in the Newcastle race and if she can race up to what she’s shown in her trials then she should be extremely hard to beat.”

Waugh will also combine with Latham when another talented filly Gloria ($5) contests the Newsure Insurance Brokers Provincial Maiden Plate (1350m).

Gloria is also a three-year-old and is by Maurice. She had trialled well before making her debut with a third placing at Wyong behind Composed and Sequista.

“Gloria is another nice filly that we also have a bit of time for,” Waugh said of the horse that is part-owned by husband and former Australian cricketer, Mark Waugh.

“I think it was a pretty good race at Wyong that she is coming out of. Composed has shown ability in all his starts and Sequista came out and won impressively at Gosford on Thursday.

“Gloria has come on from the run and I’m hoping for a good run again on Saturday.”

Gloria will face stern opposition from the Nacim Dilmi-trained Federal Reserve ($1.90 fav), which lines up on the back of two placings in as many runs since resuming from a spell.

Dilmi has two other good chances in action at the meeting with Bluebird Bay ($2.10 fav) contesting the opening race of the day and How Much Better ($6) lining up in race six.
