Schiller Calls On Import's Quality In Noble Gosford Quest

By Ray Hickson

The touch of ‘quality’ jockey Tyler Schiller saw in Nobler’s last start win will be what he’s relying on to go back-to-back on the emerging galloper at Gosford on Saturday.

Schiller was so impressed with the Chris Waller-trained import’s Sydney debut, a slashing win over the Randwick mile on Anzac Day, he’s confident Nobler can overcome adversity again in the Tooheys Handicap (1600m).

Nobler surged home from near last at the 400m to win, showing Schiller a strong turn of foot and the bravery needed to work his way through the field to get to the outside at speed.

“I wasn’t expecting the horse to win from an impossible position like he did,’’ Schiller said.

“From what I felt he’s definitely got plenty of quality.

“I don’t love Gosford for a get back, run on, horse but it depends on tempo. If they go fast enough he’s still classy enough to overcome it.

“If he can jump and put himself a bit closer it would be nice but we don’t want to ride him out of his comfort zone or he might not finish as well.”

The German bred gelding, $3.60 with TAB on Thursday, clocked a 33.46 (Punter’s Intelligence) for his last 600m when he won two weeks ago, a 10.75 from the 400m-200m took him from that impossible position to a striking one.

Schiller said the strength of the win tells him 2000m won’t be a problem for the four-year-old as his campaign continues.

“I was lucky I was on a brave enough horse, he moved Ash Morgan’s horse (Fioprospero) out of the way quite well and I just got up there in time to get outside of Dylan Gibbons (on King Pedro),’’ he said.

“If he got to the run before me I probably would have been held up behind him and I probably don’t win the race.

“He quickened like a nice horse. He went to sleep in the run which is the best thing because I think he will go further.

“He has a lot of leg under him, he’s not the strongest bodied horse but has some big long legs and once he gets into stride he’s very manoeuvrable.”

The Waller stable is strong in Nobler’s race with Mr Miller, an unlucky second at Randwick last start, Cloisters and Crossbow also engaged.

Schiller teams up with Waller again in the $500,000 Steinbok The Coast (1600m) chasing successive wins on Rotagilla.

It was another case of rounding up his rivals from well back in the field when the four-year-old scored second-up over the 1800m and based on how he went about it the jockey feels coming back in distance isn’t against him.

“I thought his win was quite good, he surprised me how sharp he was from the 400m to the 200m and pick up inside of Polymnia,’’ he said.

“I was expecting a bit of a grinding horse being a stayer even though he had run well over the mile plenty of times.

“He got a lovely run, they went a good gallop which really helped him and he may get a similar run.”

Rotagilla jumps from barrier four in The Coast and Schiller hopes that gives him some options.

Nobler wins at Randwick on April 25

“On his turn of foot the other day I think he’s good enough to run a bold race,’’ he said.

“He’s only just getting into his best racing, I thought he’s showed a lot of maturity compared to his last prep, he’s come out and relaxed really well over a distance he used to be a bit fierce over.”
