Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Randwick 25th July

It’s hard not to draw a line between Brad Widdup’s latest progressive mare Satono Jasmine and last summer’s ‘find’ Hyperbolic and there’s every reason to think, based on her latest win at Randwick last weekend, she could climb a bit higher.

Cast the mind back to the summer and Hyperbolic had graduated from provincial class to put a couple of city wins on the board then was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes at Gosford just after Christmas.

It wouldn’t surprise if Widdup puts Satono Jasmine on a similar path after what Punter’s Intelligence data showed was a very strong win as she went to 1800m in the B&K Group Australia Handicap.

There were three 1800m events at Randwick and hers was the slowest run overall, set up by some pedestrian times in the first 600m-800m of the race.

So it’s no surprise she’s had to run significantly faster sectionals to come from near last, she’s clocked 34.83 for her last 600m which was about 1-1/2 lengths faster than the next best.

She ran a sizzling 11.25 from the 400m-200m and her last 200m of 11.83 was the meeting’s second fastest.

The mare goes for a break with four wins on end and if she comes back improved expect her to collect more wins in the new season.

The run by third placed Oraqua is worth a mention, she was caught inside Satono Jasmine as they straightened and had to wait a bit before making her run.

She’s run home in 11.84 for her last 200m, so third quickest of the day, in a more than handy effort.

The meeting’s fastest last 200m came out of the TAB Highway, also run over 1800m, and that went to the Matthew Dunn-trained Bails who charged home from last running 11.75 into fourth.

His last 600m was a couple of lengths faster than anything else and he’s only lightly raced, and already a winner at 2000m, and he can be placed to advantage.

Astronomix can be counted as another promising horse who is starting to put it all together, and though he was a little wayward his win in the Happy Retirement Lynne McLean Handicap (1300m) was impressive.

He’s run home in easily the race’s best last 600m of 35.17 and his last 200m of 12.12 is almost two lengths quicker than the next best.

Kudos must go to the runner-up Nullarbor Jane who didn’t exactly have a picnic up front and ran them along in the lead. While her last 600m is considerably slower than the winner, naturally, her effort is underlined by her final 200m of 12.42 being the second fastest of the race.

At least one contender for The Kosciuszko emerged at Randwick and that’s So You Pence who returned from a layoff with a dominant showing in the ATC Thank You Owners Handicap (1300m).

Granted she had a nice run in behind the speed and didn’t need to go around a horse but she sprinted sharply when asked as she’s run a race best 35.36 for her last 600m and that sprint went on show with 11.36 from the 400m-200m.

She ran fifth in The Kosciuszko last year before winning the Barn Dance.

Runner-up Bandi’s Boy also contested the 2025 Kosciuszko and while he’s a bit hit and miss he followed the winner home and clocked the fastest last 200m of the race in 12.05.

And the run of Warrior For Peace, winner of the Country Championships Northern Wild Card, off a two month break was excellent as he made plenty of ground into third running 35.44 for his last 600m.

Expect Swift Legend to be a coming winner at Midway level at least, with the caveat he needs a dry track or close to it, after his more than handy second behind the in-form The Mona Lisa.

He was a month between runs an 1300m up to 1600m and it showed as he was under pressure well before the turn but was able to rally and close off the race with the fastest last 200m of 12.36.

Fastest last 600m: Zouripper 34.27.
