Future's Still Looking Bright For Doyle Stalwart

By Ray Hickson

Super Bright has been something of a stalwart in Nathan Doyle’s stable and while her racing days are numbered he’d like to think she can show at Warwick Farm on Wednesday that there’s more wins in store before time is called.

The seven-year-old mare was a winner at Canterbury in January and with the stronger autumn carnival racing around she resurfaces for what could well be her final preparation in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1100m).

With six wins from 41 starts and almost $400,000 in prizemoney, Doyle said she’s been a great horse for the stable and now is the right time for her to be in work.

“She’s been around a while and she’s been as honest as ever for the owners,’’ Doyle said.

Trainer Nathan Doyle (Pic: Trackside).

“She’s fit and well and sound and she’s enjoying her racing but the day she tells us she’s not she will be retired.

“We gave her a little bit of a let up after her last start in planning to target off season winter racing.

“She appreciates getting her toe in so we thought that’d be the right plan.”

Doyle said Super Bright, $5 with TAB on Tuesday, has freshened up well since her last start fourth, beaten half a length, at Canterbury at the end of February and while she’s more effective over 1200m he’d expect her to be competitive.

“She’s been plagued by bad barriers, when she draws well you can ride her a pair closer which is vital with her,’’ he said.

“A good gate helps and we should be able to ride her just behind the speed.

“It seems the right race, 1100m is probably short of her best but she has had the one soft trial and she can sprint well fresh.”

Rush Attack will be having his second run since last June and his first for a month when Doyle rolls the dice in the Exceedence @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1300m).

The Newcastle trainer said he’s been waiting for the gelding to find the right scenario to improve on his first-up run but hasn’t been handed any favours so he has to go to the races and try his luck.

“I’ve scratched him twice because he’s drawn badly and he’s drawn wider,’’ he said.

“You can’t sit at home in the box forever. It’s not ideal but his first-up run was good.

“He sits in that 72 bracket and we’re just trying to find the right races for him and build him up.”

It was a successful weekend for the stable with Churchill’s Choice claiming the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup and securing eligibility for the $3 million Big Dance.
