Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of former trainer Russell Clout.
Russell was a trainer at Wyong and father to handy trainer Michael Clout, however not many people knew about Russell's achievement before his racehorse training days.
In his early years Russell was a talented tennis player in fact one year early in his career, he contested the Australian Open only to be beaten in straight sets by the great Ken Rosewall.

He realised that tennis was not going to make him a living at that stage, so he started working for the 3M company, this is the business behind such brands as "Post It", "Scotch Brite", "Nexcare" & many more.
After climbing the ranks at 3M, Russell decided that racehorse training was his passion and so he arrived at Wyong to begin his career in the Thoroughbred Industry.
Russell didn't have to wait very long for his 1st winner, when Jodie Ridge piloted his horse Greedy to a win at Newcastle at the juicy odds of 140-1.
However, Russell's greatest joy in racing would come years later when he was mentoring the training career of his young son Michael who turned out some handy horses including Wellington Boot winner Sengiggi Beach and multiple city winner Cooder.
Russell was a true gentleman to those who knew him in racing and was always on hand to assist anyone at the track who needed guidance.
He passed away in Wyong hospital on his 94th birthday. He will be truly missed by Michael, Leanne, James & Emily.
