Vale Mr Darby Armstrong
Former Sydney trainer Darby (Don) Armstrong has passed away at 90 years of age.
Darby was born and bred in Boorowa, NSW and had some success as an apprentice when indentured to Jimmy Wagner.
“He used to be my old sparring partner,” said former Steward, Brian Killian. “We were both apprentices at the same time.
“Darby had to give up riding due to increasing weight and became a licensed trainer in the early 1960s.
“He went to Macau in 1989 for about 11 years and then returned and I remember he pulled off a big coup on a horse called Smoke at Rosehill.
“He went up to the Gold Coast to live and passed away up there.”
