There was a lot to unpack from the first major three-year-old race of the new season but no doubt the flashing light was above Under Focus as he charged to the line at the end of the 1100m in the Rosebud.

The Kris Lees-trained colt was taken back from his wide gate to be last coming to the turn and he didn’t really get a chance to warm up until around the 200m as he worked his way off the inside.

So for Punter’s Intelligence data to record a 33.18 for his last 600m, the race’s best by a length, and be so sharp at the end of what was a solidly run race says he’s come back in excellent order.

He’s run 10.66 from the 400m-200m and 11.18 for his last 200m, both again the race’s fastest.

It’ll be interesting to see what he can produce when he’s stepped up in distance given he’s yet to race beyond 1100m but if he can reel off those sorts of times from a closer position in running he could be a Group 1 winner in waiting.

Granted something had to run on from the back given they did scoot along in the Rosebud. The three-year-olds stopped the clock almost four lengths faster than the older horses in the Benchmark 78 a couple of races earlier.

There were a couple more runs just behind the placings that stood out with fourth placed Castillo King running 33.43 for his last 600m and 11.31 for the last 200m while Half Pipe in fifth ran 33.33 and 11.29.

But take nothing away from the winner Chilly Girl.

She was able to use her early speed to effect and sit just behind the leaders, and she’s run 33.48 for her last 600m which, when you consider she was asked to do more early, showed there’s plenty of strength inside her.

The filly sprinted sharply to record 10.86 from the 400m-200m as she reeled in the leader Blue Door and her last 200m of 11.39 says she’s wasn’t exactly stopping.

Althoff showed he’s not just a get back-run on type with a slashing performance to win the Racing And Sports Plate (1400m) as he clocked 33.61 for his last 600m and comfortably the race’s best last 200m of 11.40.

He could perhaps head to a race like the Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle and be competitive.

Runner-up Attica did more than enough in his first run as a gelding, he was used up early to find a forward position and stuck on well.

Probably the hidden run from the race came from Piggyback who was also resuming at a trip short of her best and she’s run the second fastest last 200m of 11.59 as she moved into fifth place.

In trying conditions during the running of the Kia Ora Bloodlines To Headlines Handicap (1300m) a promising filly called Savvy Diamond stepped up to the plate from a Goulburn maiden win to giving the hotpot Steel Will a late fright.

She ran the fastest last 200m of the race in 11.67 so it’s no surprise she pulled good ground off the winner. Follow her up further in distance.

And there might be a race for Your Colour, the $61 outsider in the race, who posted a race best 34.21 final 600m and second fastest last 200m of 11.82 to run fourth. She’s a maiden after two starts but imagine Chris Waller will find the right race for her.

Street Artist had to be conservatively ridden from a wide barrier in the Proven Thoroughbreds Handicap (1100m) but the way he finished off says the state switch is to his liking and he’s getting back in form.

The gelding ran the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 32.90 in a close third behind Polyglot after weaving through the pack. He and fourth placed Harry Got Styles ran 11.41 for the final 200m which was second only to Beside The Ocean (11.19) who warmed up late.
