In another time, Lindermann could easily have been one of racing’s superstars.

Over the three and a half years since his lone Group 1 win he’s been competitive with the sport’s headliners but just fallen short, six Group 1 placings provide a small illustration.

When he’s come back a notch he’s proven awfully hard to beat and that’s what jockey Nash Rawiller is expecting as he looks to record successive Group 2 $300,000 Asahi Super Dry Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) wins at Randwick on Saturday.

Rawiller said the Chris Waller-trained gelding has been a wonderful horse for all concerned, he might only have the one major but he’s collected $5.1 million – about $2 million of that last spring.

“We’ve had a few stellar years, in the right timeframe when there wasn’t those good ones around his record could be a lot better,’’ Rawiller said.

“The amount of times he’s been a close second or third to a Fangirl, Via Sistina or any of those is quite incredible.

“Last year he came off a similar effort first-up and bounced right back, which he’s done a few times. I really think the horse has come back well.”

Lindermann’s first-up record is somewhat ordinary but second-up he’s won four times including, as Rawiller alluded, following a Winx Stakes failure a year ago with beating Sir Delius in the Chelmsford.

In 2025 he was 10th in the Winx, eight lengths from Via Sistina, then won the Chelmsford, Hill Stakes and Craven Plate and ran second in the 7 Stakes. Two weeks ago he ran ninth behind Autumn Glow in the Winx, beaten 7-1/4 lengths.

Only two horses this century have gone back to back in the Chelmsford – Hawkspur in 2013 and 2014 and Lonhro in 2002 and 2003.

Though he didn’t win in the autumn Lindermann, $2.50 with TAB on Thursday, stretched Aeliana in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and split Sir Delius and Autumn Glow in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

The seven-year-old had a minor operation over his break to clean up a joint issue and Rawiller said to his eye, while he wasn’t on board first-up, the horse should continue to improve.

“Sometimes it can take them a couple of runs to get their confidence back I reckon,’’ he said.

“He’s one of those horses that when his confidence is up he’s near unbeatable. Hopefully he can bounce back and really set himself up for his next few runs.

“By the time we get to the 600m if I’m wondering whether now’s the right time to quicken I’ll know I’ve got the first half of the race right. My confidence will be a lot higher then.”

As much as Lindermann has been a warhorse, the same can be said for nine-year-old Private Eye who Rawiller expects will make his presence felt as usual in the Group 2 $300,000 Myplates Tramway Stakes (1400m).

The two-time TAB Everest placegetter is about to pass $13 million in prizemoney and Rawiller said his first-up second at Caulfield, behind Cosmic Crusader, was encouraging.

“I thought he was great, the horse that beat us ran enormous to run third in the Group 1 last Saturday so that form has held up well,’’ he said.

“It shows he’s come back as good as he can be really.”

Rawiller, well known for outsmarting his rival jockeys with out of the box rides, said he sees the outside gate for Private Eye as something he can work with.

“Sometimes he races better when he has a bit of open space with not too much around him,’’ he said.

“His gate speed really helps him overcome awkward barriers quite quickly.”
