Kensington Winners - Tips For Wednesday 3rd June

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Kensington meeting at Randwick. Selections based on a soft to heavy track.

Race 1 – 12:50PM MAGNA GRECIA @ COOLMORE AUSTRALIA HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Giftgiver led and boxed on nicely on debut at Kembla when a drifter in betting. The winner there went on to run third at Rosehill last weekend and he was fighting strongly at the finish. From the inside gate you’d imagine he’ll be handy and is worth a look.

Dangers: 5. The Denzel might find this a bit short but he’s been a bit hidden in his trials on the inside when they’ve been sweeping home wider out. Wouldn’t shock to see him finishing off strongly late. 2. Equation had every chance on debut and disappointed behind Peltzer when solid in the market so he will need to improve. He’s back 100m and into midweek company so will have that chance. 4. Sharpshooter did all the chasing behind Anders on debut at Wyong and held the rest at bay strongly. That form looks handy, despite the margin, and he could be an improver.

How to play it: Giftgiver E/W ($7.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Giftgiver runs second at Kembla Grange on May 16

Race 2 – 1.25PM EXCEEDANCE @ VINERY HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

Staying with 1. Armatree who debuted with a sound fourth at this track two weeks ago where he drifted back to last and hit the line well. Had some support there and will be better for the experience. Probably gives away a start but expecting him to run well. Read jockey James McDonald's comments on Armatree and some other rides here.

Dangers: 7. Dance contested the same race as Armatree and finished just ahead of him in second place after racing midfield. That was his best effort in three starts and has gate one here. Must be included in the main chances. 10. Wild Irish settled well back and charged down the outside to just miss behind September Run, who has since on a Listed race, at Canterbury a month ago. Ran fourth on a heavy track at her second start and she’s not far off a win. 9. Rosa Moyessi is out of a G1 placed mare who was a noted wet tracker and her trials have been solid. Don’t be surprised if she runs a cheeky race on debut.

How to play it: Armatree E/W ($4.00 TAB Fixed Odds); Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 3 – 2:00PM MICROPHONE @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

5. More Prophets blew the start at Kembla last time and that almost certainly cost her a win as she went down narrowly after doing plenty of chasing. Ran a last 600m of 34.57 (Punter's Intelligence), more than two lengths quicker than anything else. Strong late at Warwick Farm prior and if she can step away cleanly she’ll be very strong late here too.

Dangers: 4. Pitchfork appeared to be wanting every inch of 1400m when a closing third first-up at Kembla and gets that trip here. Fitter, drawn well and looks an improving type who should measure up. 6. Indigenous is your likely leader and she showed some fight in her first two starts before being run over in the last couple before a spell. Seems to have come back well and she raced well clear in her latest trial to win by a big space. If she gets control she may well win but still like to see her do it first at a short price. 1. Legend Has It was only getting warm at the end of his second trial at Randwick a couple of weeks ago and 1400m first-up looks ideal. Cost $500K, expecting him to get back and be running on and it wouldn’t shock if he finished in the placings. Read trainer Les Bridge's comments about his runners here.

How to play it: More Prophets WIN ($2.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 4 – 2:35PM SKY RACING ACTIVE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

All eyes on 9. Lost And Running who ran right up to his short price winning on debut at Scone. He sat wide and ran fast time there winning easing up, his last 600m a slick 33.12 (Punter's Intelligence) and two lengths faster than the next best. Trialled strong on wet ground so that shouldn’t be an issue and while this is a step up he’s the one with all the promise. Hard to beat.

Dangers: 5. Accelerato is a big threat if the favourite takes a misstep. He raced well without a lot of luck last time in and has a great turn of foot to call upon. Yet to win first-up but trialling okay and has the leading rider on board. Respect. 10. Coco Cuber should also be entertained as a danger. Showed a heap of promise last time in but had excuses in his two city runs, once working overtime to find the front and the other stepping slowly. Held up for a run at them in his trial and that could be the way he’ll be ridden here. Keep safe. 4. Great Danger has been freshened up since the Provincial Championships Final where he led and faded. Previous form was handy and should get a nice run just off the pace. Good enough if he produces his best to be in the finish.

How to play it: Lost And Running WIN ($1.75 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 5 – 3:10PM RANVET POWER FORMULA HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

7. Le Lude is a good each-way chance if they can run on, she’s been excellent in three runs back kicking off with a soft track win. Made her run along the inside when they were getting off the fence here two weeks ago and beaten less than a length. Suited and should run well.

Dangers: 2. Donandkim ran a nice race on a heavy track behind Indy Car back in April and far from disgraced running on out wide into fourth at Warwick Farm three weeks ago. Just needs a few little things to go his way and he could easily break through. 8. Madam Legend looked good winning twice at Newcastle then battled away evenly at Warwick Farm when not able to be on the speed. Trialled well on a heavy track last week and her chances enhance if the track improves. 3. Reformist disappointed here last time but did strike trouble midrace and the winner broke the field right up. Capable of turning it around and wide draw isn’t a negative as he likes to build on his run. Keep in mind.

How to play it: Le Lude E/W ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Le Lude runs fifth at Kensington on May 20

Race 6 – 3:45PM SCHWEPPES HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

8. Maggie Miss gets her chance to post a win after three game performances for as many placings since a break. Worked a bit too hard early under 60.5kg here last time but stayed on well and while taking on the boys here drops 5kg, should get some control and be hard to run down.

Dangers: 9. Big Bad Bruce was a shade disappointing when beaten into third place at Warwick Farm three weeks ago as a solid favourite. Perhaps the mile was just a bridge too far in this company and if that’s the case he will appreciate coming back in trip. Drawn well and Nash rides so worth another chance. 12. Mantelli is a big watch first-up since three starts in Queensland in the early summer. Trialled very well at Rosehill then on a heavy track at Canterbury was kept very wide and not asked at all. Whether that means he’ll handle the wet remains to be seen but have to keep an eye on him. 1. Convinced resumes as a gelding and he was nice enough late in his trial a couple of weeks ago. Hasn't run a bad race and worth including in the chances.

How to play it: Maggie Miss WIN ($3.60 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Maggie Miss runs third at Kensington on May 20

Race 7 – 4:20PM TAB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Hibiscus Lady put the writing on the wall that a win is close with a narrow defeat first-up where a bump about 200m out probably cost her. Fitter and second-up form is good, handles the wet and drawn soft. Should put herself in the finish somewhere.

Dangers: 12. Miss Spiteful had no favours first-up when three deep on the pace but she boxed on hard to run third over this course. Fitter and drawn to get a nicer run, if the inside holds up, so expect her to be very competitive. 11. Brunetta showed a good deal of ability last time in with a couple of impressive provincial wins. This is a step up but her latest trial showed she’s in good order and is sure to be strong late. Each-way. 9. Private Thoughts was disappointing first-up after tracking the leader and going backwards from the 300m. Did improve quickly last prep and the blinkers go on here so entitled to have another look at her before thinking she may not have come up.

How to play it: Hibiscus Lady E/W ($7.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.
