Canterbury Winners - Tips For Friday Night 14th December

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Friday’s night meeting at Canterbury Park. With rain forecast, selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 – 6:15PM TAB REWARDS PLATE (1200 METRES)

Godolphin’s two-year-olds are firing and they produce another here in 7. Devachan who is typically well bred and she found the line to win her only public trial at Rosehill recently. It’ll be interesting to see if she has any early speed and if they elect to offset the barrier but regardless on what she showed in her trial she’ll be hard to beat either way.

Dangers: 11. L’Cosmo is another nicely bred filly on debut, out of Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour. Her first trial was better than it looks on paper then she was ridden handy to win at Wyong in her second hitout. Barrier one could be a big advantage and it’d be a surprise if she’s not in the finish. 12. Terrifying started well in the market on debut at Randwick and didn’t fire at all. Inclined to give her another chance but more on the minor end of the prize. 2. Chasing Comets has trialled twice for two seconds, was under some pressure in the latest. Still, worth including as a place chance.

How to play it: Devachan WIN ($2.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 6:45PM MEMBER GET MEMBER HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

1. River Bird is the horse to beat. She’s been luckless in all three runs this time in, cardiac arrhythmia first-up then a couple of narrow defeats where a small break in the run would have seen her home. Drawn that little bit better here and back to 1200m could see her a little closer. Either way if she gets the luck in running she’ll take holding out.

Dangers: 2. Ljungberg showed promise as a two-year-old and returns as a gelding this time in. Both his trials have been handy and he’s already proven himself to handle some give in the track. Looks a big chance. 7. Exoplanet is a big watch on debut. Trials have been spaced and in her only public trial this time in she was buried back on the inside near the tail and not appearing to be let go at all. Drawn well, James McDonald booked. Betting a good pointer. 6. Russian Romeo is another query runner. Five starts in Victoria have been mixed but judging him on his trial at Randwick a couple of weeks ago you had to like the way he cruised home to win from last. Each-way.

How to play it: River Bird WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 – 7.15PM CANTERBURY FOODIES MARKETS HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

Happy to stick with 7. Snippetspeed on the back of an impressive first-up win on the heavy track at Warwick Farm. He looked very strong there and an extra 150m can only be in his favour on pedigree. A soft track would be ideal for him too. This is obviously a harder task but he looks to have plenty of upside and is well worth a look each-way at least.

Dangers: 11. Sizzling Ace is still a maiden and is well found in the market but she’ll also relish soft ground after she was narrowly beaten at the same Warwick Farm meeting after leading. Expect she’ll be right on the speed again from barrier one and is one of the main chances. 6. Smiling Manolito has only won one race but all three runs this time in have been solid from the front and he’ll handle a soft track without any worries. Beaten by an in-form horse last time and should be thereabouts again. 10. Welsh Legend has improved with each run and was always in a striking position when scoring over this course two weeks ago. Soft track shouldn't worry. Has claims.

How to play it: Snippetspeed E/W ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 – 7.45PM THE AGENCY REAL ESTATE HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

11. Pembroke Castle has been costly but he goes on top after the late scratching of Let's Party Marty. He ran third here last start after enjoying a decent enough run. Slightly held up in the straight but kept coming. Needs a win but shouldn’t be too far off them again and with the race falling away he gets his chance.

Dangers: Kopite has a heavy track win to her name from two starts back but back onto a good track last time didn't fire at Rosehill. Tends to run well at this track so don't dismiss. 10. No Interest doesn't win often but she was close up in the same race as Pembroke Castle last start and she can perform in the wet. Each-way claims. 13. Sausalito is effective in the wet and this is a bit easier than his last couple behind Waruna and Baller. Has the chance to be in the finish.

How to play it: Pembroke Castle WIN ($3.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 – 8.15PM BAHCO HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

1. High Power is a promising horse stepping out beyond a mile here after an excellent effort in the Provincial Final at Kembla a couple of weeks ago. He was no match for Bobbing but he appeared as though he was looking for a bit more ground as he kept coming without really dashing in the soft ground. Drawn ideally to land in a good spot and he’s clearly the best horse in the race. Go well.

Dangers: 3. Tunero had been a bit enigmatic but he finally posted another win over this course two weeks ago where he always looked the winner in running. The question is can he go back-to-back? Given he’s been consistent this time in he might be earning the trust back. 10. Nautibernie disappointed behind Tunero in the same race but what might aid her is a softer track than she faced on that occasion. She does need a win soon though and everything will have to go right for her. Each-way. 8. The Iron Maiden lines up for start 99 here, very rare for a mare, and she’s racing honestly around this level without winning. Placed on good and heavy tracks of late and is one you should throw into the trifectas.

How to play it: High Power E/W ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 6 - 8:45PM KAWASAKI KEIBA TROPHY (1100 METRES)

5. Legislation might have been a bit unlucky not to win first-up but either way his effort to come from last at the 200m and be beaten 0.7 lengths was excellent, running easily the best last 600m of the race in 34.45 (Punters Intel). Hopefully he can be ridden a shade closer this time and he’s fine with the sting out of the track. A winnable race for him if the breaks go his way.

Dangers: 13. Star Of O’Reilly is an interesting runner coming off a dominant debut win at Muswellbrook where he was on the pace all the way from a wide gate. Expect he will go forward here and has to be respected as the horse with the most scope for improvement. 9. Time Out Of Mind was a little plain at Kembla last start on a wet track but hit the line nicely to just miss at Randwick prior. So long as the track isn’t too wet here, and it shouldn’t be worse than soft, he’s capable of being in the finish. 10. Vega is one of those horses that bobs up now and then and he was only a couple of lengths off them here last start on a good track. Could surprise.

How to play it: Legislation WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 7 - 9:15PM PHIL GILBERT KIA EVENING STAR (1550 METRES)

There was plenty to like about the run of 5. Zip A Dee Doo Dah in a good form race at Rosehill last month. He had to shoulder out of a pocket and he made plenty of ground into third behind Organza and Reflectivity. He clocked the fastest last 600m of the race, a 34.49 (Punters Intel). Impressive winner of the Kempsey Cup before that and he’d only need the breaks in running around Canterbury to go close.

Dangers: 8. Nicochet has some compelling form lines around Villiers favourite Sky Boy from three of his last four starts. Runner-up to that horse two starts ago and happy to forgive latest where he was too far back. Will need the breaks from a tricky gate but on form he is hard to ignore. Read trainer Jason Coyle's comments here. 3. Mutarakem can be a bit hard to catch at times but he’ll appreciate coming back in class and back onto a softish track. Only fair last start but two runs back when placed behind Notio was a nice effort and on that is in the mix. 13. See The Master is fitter for two runs back from a spell and has drawn a much kinder barrier this time around. Not beaten far in both recent attempts and if he’s going to do something this time in he should be in the finish of this.

How to play it: Zip A Dee Doo Dah WIN ($3.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Zip A Dee Doo Dah runs on for third at Rosehill on November 24

Race 8 - 9:45PM NIGHT RACING HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

So long as the track isn’t heavy, happy to forgive 8. Taniko for her last start failure as a short priced favourite at Warwick Farm on a heavy track. Luckless over this course second-up, clearly should have won there, and I don’t mind the wide gate so long as she can get some cover. Well worth another chance at the odds.

Dangers: 4. Miss Invincible led and was never really pressured at all when breaking through over 1000m at Warwick Farm last week. This one is a bit harder, she has the extra 100m and goes up 4.5kg. Still, she will be on the pace and giving a sight. 10. See The Show handles a wet track okay and has been placed in his last two soft track attempts so overlook last run. Each-way hopes. 1. Aimalac Millier held her ground behind Heart Conquered in the heavy at Warwick Farm last time, the race was dominated on the speed. Back in class and has a heavy track win to her name so is not out of it.

How to play it: Taniko E/W ($4.80 TAB Fixed Odds).
