J-Mac The One To Follow At Wyong On Thursday

By Gary Harley

Sydney’s premier jockey James McDonald has six mounts at the Wyong race meeting on Thursday and four of them are early favourites. Three of his mounts - Oconee ($3 on TAB), Nyami ($1.70 favourite) and Loretta ($9.50) - are trained by Chris Waller while the remaining two Bethencourt ($3.50 fav) and Knight ($3.30 fav) are prepared by local trainer Kim Waugh.

Oconee starts the day for J-Mac in the Electra Cables Maiden Plate (1600m) and he is second-up after three close-up performances at Kembla, Hawkesbury and Newcastle in his first prep during the autumn. Oconee has drawn nicely.

Nyami ($1.70) will contest race two, the Haneco Lighting Maiden Plate (1350m). The 4-year-old was narrowly beaten when placed in his only two starts at Canterbury in December and the Kensington track on New Year's Day. Nyami trialled okay at Warwick Farm a month ago. The roughie of McDonald's six mounts is the Sebring filly Loretta in race three, the Sunny Lighting maiden Handicap (1200m). Loretta is on debut after four trials in which she was unplaced in all four.

Waugh’s pair Bethencourt and Knight will be hard to beat in race 7, The Magic Millions 2YOs in Training Sale Benchmark 64 Handicap (1350m) and race 8, Go Electrical Charmhaven Benchmark 64 Handicap, respectively. Bethencourt led all the way to win at Newcastle in March and the grey was narrowly beaten first-up at Kembla two weeks ago. Knight, an all-the-way winner on debut at Kembla in May, has won two trials recently.

Also WRC’s Magic Millions three-leg Provincial Series starts today. Based on acceptances there are 22 Provincial trainers vying for a fantastic prize in this, the first leg of the series. Provincial Trainers will score points for a top 3 placings (3/2/1) throughout the meeting, with Race 7 (Magic Millions 2YOs in Training Sale - Nov 10 - Gold Coast Benchmark 64) our bonus race with trainers earning double points. The meeting’s top-scoring Provincial trainer will score airfares, accommodation and transfers to the Magic Millions sale of their choice.

RACE 1, ELECTRA CABLES 4YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE, 1600M: Alumna ($2.30 fav) is a mare which has been close-up in her only two starts at Newcastle and Kembla recently. She has led in both starts and she will appreciate the shorter straight at Wyong. Oconee ($3) will be fitter for his first-up run and he was placed twice in May. Kutayha ($3.20) was placed in country Victoria in his only two starts in May.
SELECTIONS: 6 ALUMNA, 4 OCONEE, 1 KUTAYHA

RACE 2, HANECO LIGHTING MAIDEN PLATE, 1350M: Nyami ($1.70 fav) resumes here on the back of a quiet trial at Warwick Farm recently. He debuted at Canterbury in December when beaten a length and in his only other start he was runner-up on the Kensington Track on New Year's Day, beaten a long head. Write On ($3.60) has been beaten less than two lengths in his two starts on this track recently and he is a front-runner. Fields of Honour ($4.60) could fill a place.
SELECTIONS: 3 NYAMI, 8 WRITE ON, 7 FIELDS OF HONOUR

RACE 3, SUNNY LIGHTING F&M MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1200M: Only Mine ($4 fav) struck a heavy track when backed into odds-on at Hawkesbury on September 10. She raced in second and third place, eventually finishing second. The filly subsequently led all the way to win a Warwick Farm trial easily on September 22. Artic ($5) will improve on her debut fifth at Warwick Farm two weeks ago. Provide ($5) was only beaten a length on debut at Gosford before an unplaced run at Canterbury.
SELECTIONS: 2 ONLY MINE, 6 ARTIC, 3 PROVIDE

RACE 4, BRILLIANT LIGHTING MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1200M: El Buena ($3.80 fav) was disappointing first-up on this track but his form last prep points to a sharp improvement here. He was narrowly beaten on the Kensington Track in April and followed up with a close fifth behind Macroura and Wild Ruler on the same track. Maccomo ($6) is racing well and has a chance. Prince Invincible ($7) is an improver after running here last time.
SELECTIONS: 3 EL BUENA, 2 MACCOMO, 12 PRINCE INVINCIBLE

RACE 5, GO ELECTRICAL LONG JETTY CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE, 2100M: It’s an open race but solid stayer Avalene ($6) is good value and the mare is racing well. She was beaten less than 2 lengths on this track when runner-up last week. She has been placed in nine of 18 starts. Toostar ($3 fav) is a promising stayer and she will appreciate the longer trip. Black Star Bowie ($4.20) has a win and 12 placings from 18 starts and he will run the trip.
SELECTIONS: 9 AVALENE, 11 TOOSTAR, 1 BLACK STAR BOWIE

RACE 6, GO ELECTRICAL THORNLEIGH B/M 64 HANDICAP, 1600M: Unamerican ($3.50 fav) is second-up after a solid fourth at Kembla first-up. In his three starts before a spell the 4-year-old won a Newcastle maiden and then was runner-up twice at Wyong and Newcastle. He has the rails barrier and Rachael King rides. New Tycoon ($9) missed the start badly when placed at Tuncurry last start and he won at Scone two starts back. Discombe ($7) likes to lead and is in good form.
SELECTIONS: 4 UNAMERICAN, 7 NEW TYCOON, 1 DISCOMBE

RACE 7, MAGIC MILLIONS 2YOS IN TRAINING SALE, 1350M: Chanting ($8) was narrowly beaten in a better field than this on Wyong Cup day. That was her first-up run and before a spell the mare's three starts resulted in two wins and a close second. The in-form Tom Berry has the mount. Bethencourt ($3.50 fav) has a boom on him and he has speed to burn. He led all the way to win at Newcastle on debut in March and he was narrowly beaten first-up at Kembla two weeks back. Commanding Missile ($4) is unbeaten in weaker company but he is smart.
SELECTIONS: 2 CHANTING, 1 BETHENCOURT, 8 COMMANDING MISSILE

RACE 8, GO ELECTRICAL CHARMHAVEN B/M 64, 1100M: Knight ($3.30 fav) resumes here after two trial wins. He led all the way to win on debut at Kembla in May. He failed on a heavy track next start at Kembla before a spell and cruised in an easy trial win recently. Ocean Emperor ($3.60) is trialling well and he won on debut on the Kensington Track in April. Long Weekend ($4.80) led all the way to win at Kembla and should be improved.
SELECTIONS: 5 KNIGHT, 6 OCEAN EMPEROR, 9 LONG WEEKEND
