The Racing NSW Appeal Panel has determined an appeal lodged by licensed jockey Louis Beuzelin against the severity of the penalty imposed by Racing NSW Stewards following an inquiry into his possession and use of a mobile telephone at Newcastle Racecourse on 27 June 2026.
During the investigation, Mr Beuzelin provided false evidence by denying that he possessed or used a mobile telephone while at the race meeting.
A subsequent search of the jockeys' room located his mobile telephone concealed amongst his personal belongings.
A review of CCTV footage also established that Mr Beuzelin used his mobile telephone while present in the tie-up stalls at Newcastle Racecourse.
Mr Beuzelin subsequently pleaded guilty to two charges, namely possessing a mobile telephone in the jockeys' room without the permission of the Stewards, contrary to AR218(4)(b), and providing false evidence during a Stewards' inquiry, contrary to AR232(i).
Stewards imposed a $500 fine for the mobile telephone offence and suspended Mr Beuzelin's licence to ride in races for six weeks, commencing on 17 July 2026, after allowing a reduction for his guilty plea.
Mr Beuzelin appealed the severity of the suspension and also applied for a stay of proceedings pending the appeal. The Appeal Panel refused the stay application. The appeal was heard at Racing NSW's Head Office on 23 July 2026.
The Appeal Panel allowed the appeal in part, reducing the suspension from six weeks to four weeks. The suspension commenced on 17 July 2026 and will conclude on 14 August 2026.
Upon completion of that suspension, Mr Beuzelin will immediately commence serving a further period of suspension in respect of a separate careless riding offence incurred at Grafton on 15 July 2026.
