Inverell's Call For Bush Battlers Cup

Nominations close on Monday (November 19) for Inverell’s unique Bush Battlers Cup (1400m) named in honour of former club president Don Bartlett who died suddenly in 2017.

It will be the second running of the race and the second this year after Racing NSW adjusted the programming from the race being an addition to the New Year’s Day TAB meeting to the feature $20,000 race on a Sky2 meeting on Saturday November 24, with all other races worth $10,000.

The race is restricted to horses that have competed at any of the one day club meetings in the North West including last week’s Tabulam meeting on the banks of the Clarence River.

On New Year’s Day the race was won by a local with Todd Payne’s Victory Lass winning narrowly from Bill Perrett’s Clipaholic.

Both are eligible again following runs at Bundarra and Warialda but Victory Lass has won a further four races since that win and will be asked to carry the grandstand under the BM 58 conditions.

Her recent win at Toowoomba was Victory Lass’s 16th career win making her the most prolific winner by her successful sire Nicconi.

Others have certainly won more money and bigger races but the mare has been well placed to consistently be in the winner’s circle on the bush circuit.

Inverell’s program also features the Digger's Cup run as an Open handicap with this year’s distance extended to 1800 metres, the first time the club has conducted a race over that distance since the course was re-configured in the late 1990’s.
