NRRA Country Championships (Coffs Harbour Sunday) - A Runner-By-Runner Guide

By John Schell

An in-depth look at the chances of every runner in Sunday's $150,000 Evergreen Turf Northern Rivers Country Championships (1400m) at Coffs Harbour.

1. SAMMY CONQUERS ALL (Noel Mayfield-Smith, Coffs Harbour) – Classy at best and won three on end midway through last year, twice at this track with a Kensington track victory in between. Resumes here after a Grafton trial win and looks poised to run a bold race.

2. ARCTIC LEGEND (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Talented type with a good record and has had three starts since joining the new stable. Is a four-time winner and was solid when a last start third at Murwillumbah. No reason a forward showing wouldn’t be on the cards in this.

3. KINGDOM UNDERSIEGE (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Highly promising galloper that has won four of eight starts including three dominant victories in three starts since resuming from a spell at Murwillumbah, Lismore, and a last start Highway win at Randwick. Progressive type that looks hard to beat again despite drawing the outside.

4. NEXT PAY RUN (Andrew Parramore, Grafton) – Won in good style at Murwillumbah in December before finishing a solid third in the Inverell Cup. Was back in winning form when scoring at Grafton when last produced and is more than capable of figuring prominently.

5. BABY RYAN (Brett Bellamy, Coffs Harbour) – Looked good winning two on end at this track in December and followed that up with a third here before a last start seventh at Taree when failed to flatter. Has talent but might need it easier.

6. BARELLO (Jordan Lee, Ballina) – Has had a number of stables but has a solid record and has been racing well leading into this. Won well at Murwillumbah two starts ago before a strong last start third at Canterbury in a Highway event. A forward showing wouldn’t surprise.

7. DE FORZA (Noel Mayfield-Smith, Coffs Harbour) – Talented type that bobs up every now and again. Finished off strongly to finish second at this track two starts ago before a midfield effort at Eagle Farm when last produced. Close-up in a Grafton trial leading into this and looms as a knockout chance.

8. CALL ME SUPER (Trevor Whittington, Coffs Harbour) – Won in good style at Grafton when resuming from a spell back in October but hasn’t been able to make any impact in any of three starts since then including a last start fifth at Port Macquarie behind Moscow Circus. Will struggle against these.

9. CONSIDERED (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Talented mare that is yet to miss a place from seven starts with four wins and three placings. Has had two starts since joining the Dunn stable and has looked good winning each at Lismore and then at Rosehill in Highway grade. Untapped and should play a prominent part in the finish from the inside draw.

10. WITHOUT PARRALLEL (SCRATCHED).

11. YENDY (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Boasts a handy record and raced on the speed and fought on well when a last start third at Port Macquarie behind Moscow Circus. Rarely too far from the action but will find this tough.

12. MOSCOW CIRCUS (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Talented mare that has three wins and as many placings from 10 starts. Won in good style at Port Macquarie in October and then down the track at Eagle Farm in December. Since returned with a strong finishing win at Port Macquarie last month and while this is tougher, she has the ability to give cheek.

13. PICASSO’S DREAM (Gary Neilsen, Lismore) – Racing well with a third at Murwillumbah two starts ago before a last start fourth at Grafton when not far away. This is a lot tougher, however, and needs it easier at this stage of her career.

14. SCRIPTED (Matthew Dunn, Murwillumbah) – Has only had six starts and has two wins and three seconds to her name and the two wins were her first two starts. Raced well in a couple of starts over the Magic Millions carnival and has the ability to play a prominent part in the finish despite the awkward gate.

15. LADY ALABAMA (Leo Clapham, Casino) – Scored a strong finishing win at Grafton three starts ago but two runs since then have been midfield finishes at Grafton and Beaudesert, and she may be aiming too high in this.

16E. TALANA (Sally Taylor, Coffs Harbour) – Has had three starts back from a spell and while he hasn’t been disgraced in any of them, he is taking on some handy rivals here and others look to have him covered.

17E. GAMING (Stephen Bennett, Casino) – Won a couple on end at Grafton and Lismore in November but most recent form has been patchy. Capable at best but others look better suited at this stage.

18E. SUPER JAIE (Donna Grisedale, Coffs Harbour) – Resumed from a spell with a solid second at this track when racing on the speed and fighting on well. Since disappointed at Taree and would need it a little easier in order to be a contender.

19E. PIEDI VELOCI (Donna Grisedale, Coffs Harbour) – Was a winner at this track in maiden grade on August 1 last year. Has had four runs back from a spell with the best of them being a first-up third at this track. Close-up when fourth at Taree last time out and has minor claims at best.

20E. SOUTH BOAMBEE (Warren Dean, Coffs Harbour) – Hasn’t looked like threating in three runs back from a spell and looks to aiming way too high against these.

SPEED MAP: YENDY should push forward from the outset and take up a prominent position. MOSCOW CIRCUS shouldn’t be far away from the good draw, while KINGDOM UNDERSIEGE has tactical speed but will need luck to slot in from the outside barrier. SCRIPTED will likely go back from an awkward barrier, while SAMMY CONQUERS ALL can get a good run in transit. CONSIDERED has drawn ideally in gate one and shouldn’t be too far away.
