Bonus Sees Gundagai Stage Club's Richest Race On Snake Gully Cup Day

By Graeme White

Gundagai will offer the richest prizemoney race in its history and it won’t be for the iconic Snake Gully Cup.

Instead, a maiden on Snake Gully Cup day will carry an additional $100,000 bonus if the winner is qualified through the Inglis sales.

Gundagai has two maidens on cup day, Friday November 13, including a Super Maiden already worth $50,000.

If the winning horse is eligible it will be a first prize money return of $122,000.

First prizemoney for the Snake Gully Cup is $48,000 in a total of $100,000 meaning the Inglis maiden will be one of the richest lower class races in country NSW.

Gundagai-Adelong Race Club secretary Michael Heath announced the incentive in the lead-up to Sunday’s meeting which honours the memory of some of the stalwarts of racing in the town.

“It’s a huge bonus which we are pleased to attach to the Snake Gully Cup meeting,” he said.

“It will help ensure a quality field and I’m sure many of the major stables will aim a horse for it and hopefully bring another for one of the feature races.

“It’s such a great two-day carnival and the bonus is another incentive for owners and trainers.

“We are also looking to incorporate a few other ideas we have in place leading into the meeting.”

Some of the major stables in Australia have previously targeted super maidens at country tracks and given the bonus race falls on Snake Gully Cup day it will also attract plenty of attention.

Meanwhile, Gundagai will race on a heavy nine surface on Sunday after some further rain in recent days.

One of the most interesting runners is Magnardo who will be having her first start for trainer Beccy Byrne of Canberra.

Magnardo is rated a $5.50 chance on the NSW TAB for the George Harris Memorial Benchmark 66 (1180m).

The five-year-old boasts strong statistics with 11 wins from 25 starts, while she also strung together five straight victories.

She has won seven of her past ten starts at Mornington, Pakenham, Ballarat and Werribee.

Her seven wins this year also places her high up in the national rankings.

Byrne was successful with $40 chance He Likes To Party at Canberra on Friday and prior to that with Who But Roo at the same track.
